POSITION SUMMARY:
The Academic Coach will be the lead implementer of the 1st & Goal partnership between The Y, Family League, the NFL and Frederick Douglass High School. The 1st & Goal program is focused on supporting the opportunities for success for the student athletes at Douglass (specifically football players) by providing intensive academic support, family engagement, and life skills. The Academic Coach will work collaboratively with school staff and the Community School Director to ensure that the needs of the participating students are being identified and met. Demonstrates a commitment to the Y in Central Maryland’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
The essential functions of this position have been separated by the different stakeholder groups within the 1st & Goal program model:
Students
- Build relationships with student-athletes and their families, coaches and teachers
- Facilitate an after-school tutoring program during the football season
- Coordinate/Develop an SAT test preparation course and ensure all student athletes participate
- Monitor student-athlete progress in each of their classes as well daily attendance and behavior
- Develop student support systems that address study skills, time management and other necessary academic skills
- Develop learning goals for each student-athlete based on identified needs and track progress quarterly on meeting the goals
- Develop college admission assistance plans with student-athletes planning to attend two or four year institutions in partnership with the Guidance Counselor and families.
Teachers
- Develop working relationships with teachers and school staff to monitor student performance and identify learning needs
- Engage teachers and school staff as volunteers in the program
- Partner with teachers and school-based staff around joint professional development opportunities
- Collaborate in development of learning goals
Coaches
- Participate as a member of the coaching staff for all meetings and planning sessions
- Attend all games by standing on sidelines with the team
- When possible, attend practices
- Keep coaches updated weekly during season on student-athlete’s academic progress
- Develop, with coaches, an academic incentive program
Parents
- Develop parent program to involve parents in the learning process
- Coordinate meetings when necessary to address student-athletes academic progress.
- Work with parents to understand the college financial assistance process
- Host opportunities to bring families and student athletes together to celebrate successes
Other Functions
- Participate in periodic staff meetings and ongoing professional development
- Create a volunteer recruitment and sustainability program for academic tutors
- Create (in partnership with the school) college tours and visits for student athletes
- Work with 1st & Goal evaluation team to provide ongoing data and program implementation updates
- Report student performance and participation data in ETO
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Schools
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree required
EXPERIENCE
- Expertise and practical experience in help desk administration and customer service.
- A minimum of three years of experience working with student athletes at the high school or collegiate level
SKILLS
- General understanding of the college admission and financial assistance process.
- General understanding of the NCAA Clearinghouse and the rules that surround the NCAA recruitment process.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent technology skills including Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, Internet use, as well as database experience.
- Ability to be focused and detailed, meet deadlines and successfully manage multiple tasks
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
- Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for Family League’s mission and vision
- Baltimore City residency strongly preferred.
