This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  Under the guidance and supervision of the Executive Director, the Sports and Activity Director is responsible for the organization, delivery and quality of YMCA program(s) to the membership, program participants and community. In addition, the Program Director is responsible for administrative tasks as they relate to program and membership, budgeting, committee involvement, staff supervision and mentoring, collaborative community efforts, facilities and equipment, campaign involvement, grants, financial assistance, volunteer support and planning.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Sport and Activity Director is expected to fulfill the following functions:

  • Directs, supervises, and implements sports program activities to meet YMCA objectives. This includes soccer, basketball, pickleball, and volleyball.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands athletic and non-athletic programs within the community in  accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities for program activities and events. Coordinates with field staff for transport and set up of equipment for games and practices; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as  budget permits.
  • Creates teams from registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings and training for coaches and referees.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines, and handbooks.
  • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards; coordinates and distributes team photographs.
  • Recruits and supervises volunteers.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness and participation.
  • Oversees the implementation and management of chess, karate, and gymnastics.
  • Organizes and conducts sports clinics and camps.
  • Connects with financial supporters for sponsorships.
  • Serves as the Y staff liaison to church groups, the homeschool community, and performs public school visitations.
  • Lead role in monitoring and performing maintenance of program spaces.

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, all Program Directors will:

  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor and conduct performance reviews of non-exempt and part-time program staff.
  • Assist in the communication, distribution and financial assistance of program information and analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of program delivery and results.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Develop and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Assist in fund-raising activities, special events including in the annual campaign.
  • Pursue/participate in ongoing program and management training and attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Initiates and/or supports public outreach opportunities.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or have four years of experience in related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 24 hours of hire and annually thereafter.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications within 60 days of hire and to remain current each year.
  • Living Our Cause, Listen 1st, and Child Abuse Prevention trainings within 72 hours of hire date and to remain current each year.
  • Basic computer and mathematical skills for program development, management and appraisal.
  • Relates effectively with diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and work through situations of varying gravity.
