The Director of Coastal Policy will shape, lead, manage and implement strategies and actions to advance Audubon’s mission and conservation objectives in Texas. Reporting to the Vice President and Executive Director, s/he acts as a critical member of the senior leadership team and closely collaborates with a variety of key staff at the state, Flyway and national level. The Director is responsible developing and overseeing Audubon’s coastal policy in Texas coordinating and implementing policy efforts with staff at the state’s programs, sanctuaries and/or centers.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Effectively and passionately guide Audubon’s coastal policy agenda inTexas, working closely with the Texas staff to effectively align the program with strategic regional and national priorities.
- Collaborate with Audubon’s National Policy team on all Texas coastalManage the development and effective implementation of both short-term and long-range policy goals for Audubon Texas.
- Raise the profile and visibility of Audubon Texas as a leader in coastal conservation policy efforts; build creative and enduring alliances and partnerships to support Audubon’s policy and conservation efforts.
- Identify opportunities for policy engagement and serve as an effective advocate for Audubon’s legislative and regulatory priorities in state and national arenas in coordination with other Audubon offices and the Vice President of the Gulf of Mexico Flyway.
- Promote an organizational culture and structure that fosters cooperation, communication, collaboration, teamwork, and trust.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support for all conservation and policy staff.
- Coordinate with the Gulf of Mexico Flyway and National Audubon conservation and policy staff; develop strong and effective working relationships with staff across the Audubon network.
- Serve as a member of Audubon Texas’s senior leadership team, to include participation in board meetings and advise on organization strategy pertaining to policy matters.
- Engage board members to assist in achieving Audubon Texas’s policy goals.
- Serve as an articulate, enthusiastic, and visible spokesperson for Audubon Texas and senior leader of the organization.
- Serve as an ambassador for Audubon Texas, engaging key stakeholders including government officials, major funders, business leaders and the media to advance conservation efforts. Lobby Congress, federal and state administrative branches and agencies, and others to advance conservation objectives.
- Stay abreast of legislative affairs and decisions effecting Audubon’s conservation agenda and its constituents.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director and other key fundraising staff, help raise revenue for the Audubon Texas.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s Degree in public policy, natural resources or related field required. Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- 7- 10 years’ progressive policy experience working in the government or non-profit arena with 3-5 years at the senior and/or management level.
- Keen understanding of current policy trends in Texas related to coastal restoration, climate change, wildlife management, and land conservation and experience applying this knowledge to policy advocacy and implementation strongly preferred.
- Experience in working in partnership with a network of local chapters and invested grassroots leaders.
- Experience working in a decentralized organization that coordinates strategies for both local and national legislative issues.
- Effective management skills, including the ability to direct and mentor staff in a decentralized setting.
- Willingness to aid in fundraising efforts as needed; experience with political campaigns a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability synthesize and interpret technical information for various audiences.
- A commitment to Audubon’s mission of conservation of birds, other wildlife, and their habitat and the ability to communicate the mission, goals, and programs effectively to partners, government officials, donors, and the public.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly across the state and elsewhere as needed, some weekends and evenings required.
