This position will primarily assist the AARP Texas Communications staff—as well as other members of the Austin-based and other Texas-based staff, as needed. Direct supervision will be provided by a Communications staff member, but a self-starter is desired for this position as there is a good bit of autonomy and independent judgment required. Interaction with other parts of the Association may occasionally be required

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Write and edit columns, press releases, blog entries and more for a variety of statewide and local audiences, focusing on the Association’s policy and social change issues.
  • Research background information for talking points and other communications needs, as needed by staff.
  • Interview volunteers and other outstanding Texans age 50+, and compose profiles.
  • Assist with social media efforts, which may include composing tweets or designing graphics.
  • Assist with press efforts, including pitching media, submitting events to community calendars and more.
  • Fulfill other duties, as needed, which may include assisting with ad buys among other tasks.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university be undergraduate juniors or seniors in good academic standing.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Looking for a strong writer who is adaptable to a challenging but rewarding work environment.
  • Ideally some writing and reporting experience for a campus or other publication.
  • Ability to multi-task and balance multiple assignments. Be flexible, coachable and a good learner.
  • English, Journalism, PR, Advertising or related majors are desirable.
  • AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program. 
Compensation/Benefits: 

Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
