Context: Builds grassroots power by increasing the number of volunteers recruited, engaged, and trained to support the climate change work in Austin and of the Sierra Club in general. Helps to plan, organize, and coordinate actions in conjunction with the Austin Climate Change Committee as directed and carried out by its multiple Action Teams.

Scope: The Climate Change Organizing Intern is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and motivating large numbers of people to take repeated action which will further Sierra Club's climate change goals. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on the role of team leaders and build grassroots power and networks. Identifies and helps build alliances with other organizations which can influence decision-makers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Learn and assist in all areas of the Austin Climate Change Committee’s work. This includes:
  • Making phone calls, helping plan and run meetings, supporting our Action Teams, maintaining VAN database, helping with social media, tabling and other outreach events, writing and sending emails, developing tabling and educational materials for Austin group, developing relationships with partner organizations
  • Additional duties as required/Opportunity for additional duties based on interest
Skills/Experience: 
  • Passion to fight climate change and social injustice
  • Desire to learn about and work on organizing and climate change
  • Self-motivated and an independent worker willing to take direction
  • Good communication skills in person and on the phone
  • Ability and willingness to work with volunteers
  • Good thinking and analytical skills
  • Good social skills
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn database skills (especially NGP VAN) and email tools (MailChimp)
  • Skill and experience in social media is a plus but not a requirement
Compensation/Benefits: 

Duration: 20 hours per week for 26 weeks from late May through mid-November at $15/hour

Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.  Sierra Club does not sponsor H1B visas.
