Context: Collaborates with chapter volunteer leaders, staff and regional groups to promote the conservation action, public education, and other goals of the Sierra Club through the coordination and execution of Chapter strategic communications plans, which includes outreach to members, supporters, the general public, and public officials.      

Scope: The Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and executing the Chapter’s communications plan with the Political and Communications Director, including earning media coverage, maintaining an engaging chapter website, elevating our social media presence, producing our monthly newsletter, and assisting with fundraising efforts. The Communications Coordinator assists chapter staff, and volunteer leaders at the Chapter and Regional Group level, in outreach to the general public and to public officials in the shaping and implementation of public policy.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Coordinate the Lone Star Chapter’s media strategy, including press release writing, editing, and distribution, pitching stories to media, news monitoring, and maintaining clip reports and media lists, among other duties.
  • Manage the Chapter’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, and track analytics, with guidance from Political and Communications Director
  • Participate in coordinated campaign teams (national/chapter/group) in Texas with communications and digital support as needed.
  • Responsible for the content, functionality, and optimization of the Chapter website and related conservation campaign websites.
  • Produce videos in line with the Chapter’s campaign and movement building objectives.
  • Organize the Chapter’s creative assets, such as images, video, factsheets, and other printed materials.
  • Design, coordinate, and produce content for monthly Chapter e-newsletter to members and supporters.
  • Provide communications support to Regional Groups, including but not limited to: producing e-newsletters, action alerts, media events, and messaging.
  • Work with the legislative, political, and campaign teams to produce fact sheets and other communications for grassroots lobbying.
  • With Political and Communications Director ensure messaging, style, and formatting is consistent with and complimentary to other Sierra Club entities’ programs and initiatives.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two to three years of experience in communications or closely related field. 
  • Excellent public relations skills and ability to communicate well with writers, editors, and publishers.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with social media engagement principles.
  • Familiarity with AP-style writing guidelines.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, web-based e-mail.
  • Experience with Constituent Resource Management databases a plus.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with major Lone Star Chapter issue areas (energy, water, and parks & wildlife).
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers, as well as independently.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
