The Shellfish Restoration Coordinator plays a key role in unifying and supporting members of the Hauraki Gulf shellfish restoration coordination group, through encouraging cooperation, managing day-to-day activities, and providing strategy and direction towards agreed shellfish restoration goals. The Hauraki Gulf shellfish restoration coordination group aims to restore and protect historic shellfish beds, and the biodiversity and ecosystem services they provide, and through restoration raise community awareness and engagement for the protection of the Hauraki Gulf environment.
This fixed term employee position will be based in Auckland, hosted by Auckland University, for 12 months (with the possibility of an extension) and report to the New Zealand Director of Conservation.
The Shellfish Restoration Coordinator provides technical leadership and support to the Hauraki Gulf shellfish restoration coordination group and promotes stewardship of marine conservation.
The Shellfish Restoration Coordinator will:
- Facilitate the sharing of knowledge amongst group members and the wider community
- Organise and run group meetings
- Liaise with all group members about the progress of their projects and provide assistance where required
- Identify and prioritise resourcing needs, skills and capacity required to deliver projects on plan and within budget
- Facilitate administration assistance (logistics, organisation, equipment, volunteers etc.) for projects as required
- Promote shellfish restoration to the public, increase community engagement, support community-initiated restoration projects
- Engage with local Government and secure public and private support for Hauraki Gulf shellfish restoration
- Assist with the writing of funding/ donor proposals
- Organising and managing member groups’ projects (e.g. mussel deployments)
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements
- Work within scope of program’s strategic goals
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances
- Experience managing staff or volunteers
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., iwi, government officials, business, scientists
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
- Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Experience in facilitation
- Must have valid driver's license
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- An understanding of Te Tiriti O Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi, and how it applies to working in partnership with Mana Whenua
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
- 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities
- Knowledge of ecological marine management principles
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land and water management and natural resource preservation
- Relevant boating and diving qualifications
- Familiarity with H&S requirements
- Familiarity with designing plans
