Under the direction of the Associate or Executive Director, the Wellness Director will successfully lead a team, plan, administer, and evaluate all adult and youth wellness-related programming. This position is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of the branch health & wellness program(s) and for the successful achievement of alignment with the YMCA of the USA initiatives to “strengthen the foundations of community” and with the Metro Atlanta YMCA strategic plan. Also, this position will play a key role in delivering THE COACH APPROACH® and any other core wellness programs endorsed by or developed by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, e.g., Weight Loss for Life, Youth Fit 4 Life, Start for Life, etc. This position will require an entrepreneurial spirit and other major responsibilities requiring an entrepreneurial spirit and vision.
The Forsyth County Family YMCA is located in the heart of Vickery Village – 6050 Y Street, Cumming, GA. The Forsyth County Family Y is a 50,000 square foot full facility, offering an array of traditional YMCA programs to include youth sports, early learning academy, adult & youth wellness. We also have a beautiful 20 acre water front camp serving 200+ kids a week during the summer months, a large Parkinson’s program and in the process of implementing an integrated teen program. We are one of the fastest growing counties in the country and rank number one in the state by recent report by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
EFFECT ON END RESULT:
This position has a primary impact on the overall effectiveness of the Wellness Department and on the success of programs and services to the community. The effectiveness of this position is primarily measured by sound department administration, by the stated satisfaction of staff and members, and by a sound fiscal position of Wellness Department while ensuring a safe, clean, controlled, and fun environment in accordance with the Metro Atlanta YMCA Philosophy.
ERGONOMICS:
Sitting, bending, stooping, standing, 15% repetitive keyboard work, demonstrating equipment use, lifting up to 45 pounds, and exposure to noise levels at an average of 90 decibels (music) over an eight-hour day.
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the Wellness Department and Group Exercise employees and volunteers.
- Develop and implement a plan to attract and recruit new members and corporate partnerships.
- Conduct pilots for new programs; develop plans and manage best practices through engagement of the staff team.
- Will become trained in Weight Loss for Life curriculum and is able to support coaches and to assist in leading group sessions.
- Effectively manage budgets; hold staff accountable for high-quality results using a formal process to measure progress.
- Foster a climate of innovation while maintaining a positive, safe, nurturing, non-threatening exercise environment
- Monitor progress towards branch’s goals by running and reviewing all necessary reports.
- Lead the Y’s presence at community outreach, including the “WHY IT MATTERS” campaign – the Y’s financial assistance program in Metro Atlanta.
- Working with the team, coordinates marketing efforts to maximize enrollments and provides ongoing support to the director on related issues.
Critical competencies based on needs specific to the branch:
- Supervise and monitor all activities relating to THE COACH APPROACH®, and follow best practices and protocols, which include staffing, scheduling, accountability, and reports.
- Perform Coach Approach appointments, and manage a caseload of at least 30 active Coach Approach members.
- Supervise and monitor all activities related to computerized fitness-management station (may include monthly reports, termination reports, top performers lists, etc.)
- Supervise and monitor all activities relating to the Wellness Center.
- Lead youth fitness activities relating to the wellness center alongside the Healthy Living Director.
- Hold monthly meetings with all wellness staff members.
- Supervise and monitor grant initiatives and Youth Fit for Life alongside the Healthy Living Director.
- Working with the memberships director, hold quarterly wellness/membership departmental staff meetings.
- Comply with all National YMCA-USA standards related to fitness programming.
- Represent the branch in the community and at assigned branch and Metro association meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- A Bachelor’s degree required in exercise science, physical education, exercise psychology, behavioral science, or a health-related field.
- Current national group exercise/personal training certification preferred from one of the national organizations, which are recognized by Y of the USA, e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA. If not, required within 30 days of employment
- Must obtain/maintain full access to Y-Exchange (yexchange.org) and to YISE (yise.ymcaatlanta.com).
- Two (2) or more years of supervision of experience required.
- Fiscal management experience required.
- Must maintain certifications.
- Must possess current CPRO/AED and O-2 certifications and renew them annually prior to date of expiration. Updated licenses shall be uploaded via Y-Exchange (yexchange.org).
- Must attend initial Coach Approach training within six months of hire date.
- Must have a strong background in team development, relationship management and member engagement.

- If internal to the YMCA, must have, at a minimum, the YMCA Team Leader certification.
