The Reuter Family YMCA in south Asheville is seeking a seasoned leader with a strong aquatics background to lead and develop the aquatics, youth and family program offerings at two growing and dynamic centers in beautiful Western North Carolina. This position gives oversight to programming at two centers, one YMCA pool and one off-site pool in partnership with a local high school. This leader will also play a role in establishing operations for a now-under-construction new 10-lane competitive pool for the local school district. Program management, staff supervision and strong community collaboration experience are needed in this role.

The Reuter Family YMCA and Mission-Pardee Health Campus YMCA have a combined service to more than 10,000 members, and are located in a diverse, growing area of south Asheville

Areas of Responsibility: 
  1. Provide vision, strategy and leadership for Aquatic, Youth & Family and Teen programming for the Reuter and MPHC YMCAs, as well as management of an off-site, school-owned 10-lane competitive pool facility.
  2. Maintain quality and ensure that the needs of the members and the community are met within these departments.

  3. Provide strong recruitment, development, and succession planning processes to insure the hiring, professional development and retention of high quality staff. Develop strategies to motivate and achieve goals.

  4. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.

  5. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of programs and trends. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in programs and employ corrective strategies as needed.

  6. Respond to member and participant concerns in a timely manner, addressing both customer service and safety concerns.

  7. Provide leadership and support to the annual campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the community.

  8. Share the story of our cause-driven work by conducting stewardship sessions with prospective donors throughout the year.

  9. Meet regularly with direct reports to check-in, coach and ensure knowledge of happenings in each department.

  10. Set operational and performance goals for self and assigned staff that are achievable and aligned with long-term goals and strategies.

  11. Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential funding sources, both private and public.

  12. Ensure branding, communication and marketing meet Association standards and portray the voice of the YMCA.

  13. Represent and articulate the Association’s strategies and programs to individuals and organizations throughout the community, developing collaborative relationships with key stakeholders; represent the YMCA with key community organizations and events.

  14. Monitor monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled. Complete variance reports and forecast updates monthly. Adjust operations as needed to achieve fiscal targets.  

  15. Foster a climate of innovation and collaboration to develop member-focused programs and lead assigned staff in the planning, development and implementation of new and innovative, cutting edge program initiatives and activities.

  16. Ensure the implementation of the Association's risk management program at all program sites and in YMCA centers to ensure safe facilities and programs for members, volunteers and staff.

  17. Ensure that all the policies of the organization are implemented, including Financial, Human Resources, and Program Policies.

  18. Ensure the safety and protect the lives of each patron in the pool area at all times. 

  19. Serve as a swim lessons instructor and/or lifeguard as needed.

  20. Maintain accurate records concerning pool maintenance, cleaning, and repair

  21. Maintain a high level of knowledge of all required rescue and survival skills.

  22. Know and understand all aquatic policies and procedures, including emergency action plans, and ensure that all these rules and procedures are always consistently enforced.

  23. Adhere to and promote the association’s core principals as framed in the YMCA’s Mission and Cause commitment document. 

  24. Oversee pool rental scheduling, completion of paperwork, and set-up/break down.

  25. Complete program entry processes for all aquatic programming.

  26. Continually maintain all safety equipment and first aid supplies and inform supervisor of any necessary repairs or adjustments.  Continually maintain accident and incident reports, records of equipment and safety inspections, and health code records.

  27. Serve on the Association Aquatics Cabinet, and other committees as assigned.

  28. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills/Experience: 
  1. Bachelor's degree in program area or related field or equivalent education/experience.

  2. Four or more years of experience in aquatics and experience in at least one of the assigned program areas, preferably Aquatics.

  3. Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fundraising.

  4. Broad knowledge of programs and proven experience in building communities within a center structure.

  5. Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the roles of volunteers and staff.

  6. Knowledge of and previous experience working with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.) with examples of inclusion and equity preferred.
