The Nature Conservancy’s Youth Engagement team collaborates with national and international partners to teach students about the critical role of nature and conservation in their lives. At the heart of this work is a focus on ensuring that all students—no matter their background, geography, or demographics–have an opportunity to identify as a conservationist within their community.  In particular, the team works to ensure that students traditionally furthest from the environmental career and education fields are engaged and empowered to both know and preserve nature.    

The Curriculum Manager oversees all aspects of program development, content creation, marketing, partnerships and maintenance related to youth engagement curriculum. They provide education expertise and support for TNC’s youth engagement work, and help establish overall priorities for TNC’s youth curriculum. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Curriculum Manager provides technical and program support to TNC’s Youth Engagement team, manages curriculum projects for K-12 youth audiences, and ensures that this work reflects the Youth Engagement team’s vision and strategy.

They work closely with various constituents including senior staff, field offices, department and division staff, other conservation or education organizations, foundations, the academic community, vendors, and other key stakeholders to ensure delivery of projects that contribute to program goals. They coordinate and manage budgets for the program and oversee the day-to-day tasks of the program. Program oversight also includes managing internal and external partners, legal review and approval processes, content and curriculum development, marketing and promotion, program evaluation, and consulting on international environmental education efforts at TNC.

They establish the Conservancy as a major partner within the environmental education content field, define conservation education priorities for the organization and build strategic partnerships with public and private organizations in order to strengthen the program’s relevance, content, and reach. They negotiate complex and innovative solutions with multiple partners to educate students about how to best conserve and protect natural communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Develop and manage content for The Nature Conservancy’s youth programs, alongside necessary internal and external relationships.
  • Frequently makes independently strategic decisions based on analysis, ambiguous information and context.
  • Negotiates complex agreements, in a political environment.    
  • Assists Director of Youth Engagement with requests for proposal (RFPs) for grant/contract funding for program.
  • Frequent travel domestically and/or internationally, evening and weekend hours.                
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.   
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.                                        
  • Experience negotiating.
  • Experience with the development of educational curriculum in either a creative or supervisory role.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in K-12 education field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing K-12 education content and programming.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in curriculum development and equitable education.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Politically savvy.
