The Senior Communications Coordinator supports the implementation of communication strategies and tactics outlined in communication plans that aim to advance TNC’s Shared Conservation Agenda. S/he reports to the Senior Project Manager responsible for coordination of content and promotion across the team on a project-by-project basis. S/he will collaborate regularly with GC and other TNC staff across multiple time zones. The role will work to elevate major cross-cutting priority communications projects and marketing initiatives and goals through project management, writing, editing, content creation and strategy support. S/he will operate out of TNC’s Worldwide Office in Arlington, Virginia.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Senior Communications Coordinator supports development and implementation of communication projects and initiatives. S/he works closely with various constituents such as Marketing division staff, field offices, program consultants and vendors. S/he will play an essential function in coordinating across GC team offices and time zones, helping ensure smooth processes and information sharing. S/he will ensure deadlines are met by working effectively and collaboratively.

S/he will create compelling content in service of key projects, including but not limited to developing messaging, feature stories, op-eds, social media content and/or asset collection in support of TNC’s Shared Conservation Agenda strategic priorities. S/he will be trained to author select content on TNC digital platforms (including nature.org) and may support target audience research, monitoring and engagement. Efforts will align with the larger content and promotions strategies established by the Global Communications team and will provide critical capacity to the areas and projects of greatest import. S/he will support project management, employing various institutional tools and principles to develop and execute work plans. S/he will also contribute to crisis and risk management communications through research or other support and use software systems to track and analyze program results, report findings, and work with senior GC staff to implement strategic recommendations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Organizes and coordinates diverse projects and activities with many variables within Global Communications priorities as laid out by the annual Global Communications plan.
  • Creates and edits digital and social content and supports publishing.
  • Assesses gaps and obstacles to recommend and implement solutions.
  • Takes responsibility and accountability for meeting priority goals and objectives in coordination with Communications Directors, Senior Project Manager, and other key team members.
  • Does not supervise any staff but may coordinate the work of peers on departmental project teams. May supervise volunteers, interns or temporary staff. 
  • Duties are performed under general supervision and established guidelines.  
  • Opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks and projects. May have full opportunity to direct individual projects.
  • Resolves complex issues independently within program area.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism or environmental sustainability field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience understanding of environmental/sustainability topics and ability to share perspectives in these fields
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience cultivating and managing large networks, strong interpersonal communication and collaborative skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 to 4 years of professional experience, ideally working in sustainability/environmental communications
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience working in an international team, across time zones.
  • Experience managing client/customer relationships.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience with digital and social media content management systems.
  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in marketing and strategic communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for various audiences from technical information.  
  • Relevant technology skills required to manage projects, prepare presentations and analyze data to construct reports. 
  • Practical knowledge of marketing and branding principles.
  • Passion for environmental and sustainability issues and belief in TNC’s mission.
