The Project Manager, Science Professional Development, is a two-year term-limited position. S/he will be responsible for managing and leading Global Science’s new professional development program for scientists. The program’s main goals are to strengthen and deepen the Conservancy’s internal scientific community so that Conservancy scientists will be better prepared to influence and promote our science priorities underpinning our Global Priorities. This new science professional development program will supplement existing professional development initiatives managed externally from Global Science and focus on those skills, opportunities, and trainings that TNC scientists identify as being important for ensuring bigger and better conservation outcomes and strengthening the standing of Conservancy scientists within the external science and conservation communities. This position will be part of the Global Science business unit and will report to the Program Director for NatureNet Science Fellows and Professional Development.
As a term position, the Project Manager will be responsible for specific deliverables throughout their tenure. These are:
- Developing curricula for early- and mid-career science staff that increases the rigor, impacts, and effectiveness of their scientific research, improves their communication skills, promotes their ability to lead conservation through new ideas, better practices and more effective partnerships, and raises their profile in the external science community.
- Developing a mentorship program.
- Working with the Program Director to create and identify opportunities for participants to practice and implement newly developed skills
- Creating and identifying opportunities to assure that the program creates a more inclusive and diverse conservation community.
- Coordinating communications trainings and curricula with the Conservancy’s Science Communications department.
- Designing and facilitating workshops and conferences that provide opportunities for participants to build community with each other.
- Regularly evaluate programming incorporating feedback and adjusting the program accordingly.
- Being an internal spokesperson for the program driving participation of scientists from across the Conservancy.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Programmatic scope requires working with scientists from many country, states, and global programs and strategy teams.
- Establishes and maintains optimal standards of performance for the program while managing project costs and budgets.
- Assists with budget development.
- Designs and facilitates meetings, workshops, and trainings that align with program goals and participant expectations.
- Manages call for program participation and application process.
- Travel occasionally, working long and flexible hours as needed.
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead, as needed; exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- 2 years of project management experience or 1 year acting as a project lead.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple projects, including working with and coordinating cross-functional staff and managing finances.
- Experience developing curricula.
- Experience managing scheduling and financial aspects of small to large projects that range from short to long term.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters or PhD in social or natural science and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience developing curricula for adult learners.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated.
- Ability to manage and implement complex processes.
- Experience working effectively in matrix organizations.
- Proficiency in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data.
- Certification in project management.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to influence without authority
- Successful experience implementing strategic program goals
