The Nature Conservancy Natural Climate Solutions program is seeking to hire a U.S. Nature4Climate (N4C) Coalition and Communications Project Manager.

The Manager will work on behalf of and be responsible to the U.S. N4C Steering Committee. The Manager will coordinate the Committee’s efforts to build support for Natural Climate Solutions policies and programs as a key climate mitigation strategy in the United States. Natural climate solutions are practices that increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from forests, grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural lands. Target audiences for N4C communications and engagement are political leaders, climate thought leaders, agricultural and forest stakeholders, non-governmental organizations, and corporations.

The Manager will work with staff within U.S. Steering Committee member organizations to build a shared narrative and key messages, develop the N4C Coalition, engage other coalitions and networks, and coordinate the N4C Steering Committee’s communications and advocacy efforts. The manager will coordinate efforts with the Global Nature4Climate Steering Committee.

This is a full-time position with two years of dedicated funding with the possibility of an extension at the end of that term.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Engage and collaborate with U.S. Steering Committee and their organization’s staff to develop and implement messaging and communications and engagement strategies; identify and prepare key spokespeople; and develop news stories and events that raise awareness and support for the Coalition’s goal. 
  • Support coordination among U.S. Steering Committee and Coalition members to ensure unified messaging, press announcements, and other communications outreach.
  • Understand the climate policy context in those areas where it matters – i.e. working with the Steering Committee policy teams to identify interventions that would have the most impact. 
  • Coordinate outreach to engage existing networks and coalitions and build new connections with new stakeholder groups as needed.
  • Write and publish Coalition materials including web content, press releases, and fact sheets.
  • Manage agency support – i.e. media relations, development of creative content, and event management.
  • Retain strong links to the Global N4C Coalition to ensure alignment and co-ordination. 
  • Track the latest news events and trends around climate change issues occurring on the state and federal levels in the United States.
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct the work of volunteers or interns. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, communications, social science, natural science, ecology or related field and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Project management experience, including coordinating the work of other professionals inside and outside an organization.
  • Communications experience, including preparing and presenting project proposals and developing written communications.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, interpreting, and compiling technical information from divergent sources.
  • Proficiency with document management, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with business, government, or legislative staff. 
  • Fluent in English

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in political science, public policy, communications, social science, natural science, ecology, or related field.
  • 6-7 years’ experience in stakeholder relations (NGO, government, private sector engagement), communications, and external affairs.
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Proven ability to create effective networks and build collaborative relationships across organizations.
  • Progressive experience in relevant communications and/or stakeholder engagement roles with both internal and external audiences; this includes developing content around complex issues including energy, land use, and climate change.  
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with community and business leaders; government or legislative leaders and staff; and agriculture and forestry landowners and their associations.
  • Solid understanding of, and demonstrable experience in, linking an organization’s business strategy and external realities to the role of communications initiatives in driving success in the marketplace.
  • Ability to work across diverse organizations to access content necessary to create and refine communications products.
  • Experience in research, critical analysis, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports.
  • Ability to translate complex technical subjects for broader audiences. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multi-channel delivery of communications projects, including experience with the distinct demands of digital channels and social media.
  • Experience with evaluating impacts of communications initiatives and adjusting accordingly. 
  • Creative thinker, good written and oral presentation skills, appreciation of design and visual communications. 
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and maintain high levels of professionalism under pressure and the flexibility and resiliency to cope with changing priorities and deadlines. This also includes the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Strong collaborative skills with interpersonal sensitivity and an inclusive style.
  • Willingness to travel 25% of time (some travel may be international)
