The Media Relations Manager works collaboratively with colleagues around the globe to develop, manage and implement media relations strategies and plans that facilitate comprehension, adoption and advancement of the organization’s goals and objectives. 

The Global Communications (GC) team operates at the heart of The Nature Conservancy’s mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. For more than 60 years, the Conservancy has protected more than 119 million acres of land, thousands of miles of rivers and more than 100 marine conservation sites globally. The GC team supports and leverages this global conservation work by providing communications strategies, top-tier media relations outreach, and engaging content that targets select audiences with the power to change the future for people and nature.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Media Relations Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing strategic media relations plans to help advance the organization’s goals and priorities.  S/he helps elevate TNC’s visibility and reputation around our global conservation priorities with top tier media audiences. S/he helps to facilitate on-going coordination and collaboration between the Global Media and Global Communications teams, and subject matter experts, spokespersons, and regional and field teams to develop stories and pitches and grow relationships with key media outlets.   S/he may develop speeches, key messages and talking points, and may organize press conferences, media tours, deskside briefings, and other direct engagement opportunities with the media, as needed.  S/he actively identifies stories and pitches relevant to target audiences and cultivates media contacts on a local, national, and international level. S/he develops and fosters relations with internal media and other key external and internal stakeholders, and manages the dissemination of media information.  S/he provides consultation, media training, coaching and talking points to persons serving as spokesperson(s), as needed.  S/he has knowledge about key issues in lands/agriculture, climate change, urban conservation, and/or water and insight into how to promote those issues with the media.  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Manage and serve as team lead on assigned communication and/or media initiatives.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with top tier media outlets and reporters
  • Develop, implement, and execute media relations strategies to advance organization’s goals.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to colleagues across the organization.
  • May directly or indirectly supervise project teams, interns
  • Manages projects within assigned budget and evaluates and reports results, offering recommendations for corrective strategies as needed. 
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting project goals and objectives.
  • Resolves complex issues independently within program area.
  • Opportunity to act independently and collaboratively to achieve program goals.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience developing, implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills.  
  • Established network of media contacts.
  • Experience developing media relations networks.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices. 
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline.
  • Experience leading or managing projects.
  • Experience working in a globally dispersed organization.
