The Global Safety Officer oversees all aspects of managing the safety and physical security of staff, volunteers, and third parties (e.g. donors, preserve visitors) working for or on behalf of The Nature Conservancy (TNC or the Conservancy), both domestic and international.  They are responsible for establishing operational standards for workplace and program safety, providing technical safety support and guidance to Conservancy staff and volunteers, facilitating trainings and drills, ensuring compliance with applicable country workplace health and safety requirements, and otherwise mitigating potential safety risks to the staff and volunteers of TNC.  The Global Safety Officer reports to the Risk Officer.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This position may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Strengthens TNC’s risk assessment framework by embedding safety and physical security of staff and volunteers into all program and project planning and leads and/or facilitates risk assessments for high profile and/or high-risk projects;
  • Assists TNC Business Units (BUs) and Regions identify appropriate safety-related protocols to address location- or activity-specific safety and security needs;
  • Updates and maintains safety and security policies and procedures, guidelines and protocols;
  • Develops training programs and drills to increase staff and volunteer awareness and skills in meeting safety and security policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols;
  • Provides input and guidance to TNC BUs and Regions and project teams to prepare emergency evacuation & response plans;
  • Conducts and coordinates with Internal Audit safety and security audits to ensure the compliance with applicable country workplace safety, security and illness and injury prevention requirements (including OSHA in the U.S.) and TNC’s other internal standards (including youth safety);
  • Reviews, updates and trains TNC staff on hazard and incident reporting and maintains (or ensures that others maintain) any required or requested safety documentation and safety training records, including records of hazards inspections;
  • Promotes safe work practices and compliance with all related Conservancy policies and procedures;
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge on safety and security standards and industry best-practices;
  • Investigates incidents in coordination with internal Ethics and Compliance, including root cause analysis, and recommends to TNC Leadership changes to business practices arising from the investigation;
  • Maintain a network of regional safety and security liaisons (as assigned in agreement with the applicable regional leadership) to gather or disburse safety and security information across all the places TNC works; and
  • Maintain a robust site on CONNECT and/or Workplace at TNC that provides safety and security information, guidance, and resources to staff.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and 12 years’ related experience in managing a network of safety and security programs or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance while meeting deadlines;  
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and in domestic and international geographical regions; and
  • Experience networking with high level staff.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated;
  • Master’s degree and 12-15 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with safety and security auditing and investigations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety legislation, codes of practice and best practices;
  • First Aid Officer & Remote First Aid Training;
  • Experience in conservation, environmental or sustainability sectors;
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results;
  • Strong organization skills, accuracy, and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff;
  • Experience coordinating projects;
  • Strong organization skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks;
  • Successful experience developing and implementing strategic program goals;
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and in unpredictable situations; and/or
  • Ability to positively influence and impact safety and security strategies, awareness and initiatives throughout a large international organization.
