The Global Oceans Finance Specialist provides finance, accounting and operations-related services to the Global Oceans business unit.  The preferred location for this position is in our World Offcie in Arlington, VA. Successful candidates must provide documentation of elligability to work in the United States of America. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Finance Specialist provides excellent support in accounting, financial, and operations activities. They administer and maintain finance/accounting activities in accordance with TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial management, and are responsible for expeditiously and courteously responding to, routing, or resolving inquiries and requests from internal and/or external customers. They prepare and monitor budgets and forecasts for operating budgets and awards, and prepares and communicates timely and accurate reports in line with finance and other deadlines. The Specialist assists with contracts management and tracking and is responsible for effectively supporting and processing staff expense reports, accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring TNC standard operating procedures are understood and followed, and maintaining and retaining records in accordance with TNC policy and business unit best practices. This position reports to the Finance Manager for Global Oceans.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supports in preparing and processing various transactional accounting needs, forms and reports, such as payment of invoices and expense reports, wire transfers, revenue receipts, journal entries and adjustments.
  • Prepares donor and management financial reports and materials including budget/spend analyses, multi-year budgeting, and forecasting. 
  • Maintains accurate systems data, data coding, reports, and documentation for historical records and internal audits.
  • Works to ensure accurate processing of income, expenses, and transfers, as well as to pull monthly financial reports from the general ledger and other ad hoc reports financial reporting.
  • Maintains excellent knowledge of TNC corporate policies and procedures, and work to identify needed improvements to established policies in keeping with the underlying principles.  
  • Streamline and systematize contracts and revenue processing work flows. 
  • Maintains a central repository of all legal documents including contracts, grants, donations, etc.
  • Ensures TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are understood and met.
  • Supports contract drafting and management processes and supports purchasing and/or procurement requests.
  • Creates and maintains reference materials, training materials and provides guidance to staff regarding contracts/grants/donations work-flow process. 
  • Coordinates time reporting, ensuring time sheets are completed on time, ensuring employees are charging their time correctly, and monitoring vacation balances.  
  • Approves expense reports, ensuring reports are completed according to the requirements and costs are charged to appropriate budget centers. 
  • Participates in and supports the Global Oceans Finance and Operations team with day-to-day tasks and occasional special projects as needed. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 3 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience with GAAP and fund accounting principles, practices and regulations.
  • Experience using automated accounting systems.
