The Global Managing Director, Protect Oceans, Lands and Waters, provides strategic and direct leadership and management for multiple (3+) organizational strategies that support TNC’s global challenges as noted in the Shared Conservation Agenda.  The Global Managing Director sets overall conservation priorities for strategies including Indigenous Peoples and Lands, Energy and Infrastructure, and Protect Oceans, Lands and Waters. They help create synergies in effectively implementing this work across The Nature Conservancy, including but not limited to providing regions with project planning support, and leading on supportive science, policies, partnerships and fundraising. They help lead an effort to address and execute systems level innovations so that protection and effective management of oceans, lands and waters can be accomplished at a scale and pace that matters. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Global Managing Director will be the primary staff person responsible for leading, managing and implementing the strategies described above. They will serve as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and academic community and will develop key partnerships to influence the use of resiliency science broadly. They will disseminate best practices, provide training and conduct analyses for organizational measures of success. The Global Managing Director will develop key partnerships, especially in supporting the capacity of others, and delivering effective management of oceans, lands and waters. The Director will engage regional and divisional programs, help advance resiliency science, and mobilize field talent to help TNC accomplish established protection outcomes. As a leading conservation spokesperson for the Conservancy, the Global Managing Director represents the Conservancy internally and externally to an array of audiences, advocating for and raising the visibility of organizational global priorities.  They work on a global scale and is responsible for fundraising in the public and private sector to ensure that sufficient resources are available to accomplish the Conservancy’s overall strategic goals. They will play a leading role in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.  This position reports to the Chief Conservation Officer. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Responsible for leading, organizing, shaping, and raising financial support for the vision and strategies of this global priority.
  • Develops long-term strategies and achieves strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provides leadership, both internal and external to TNC, and works collaboratively with TNC regional and divisional teams, external affairs, marketing, fundraising and other programs to implement priority strategies.
  • Oversees the development of innovative scientific methods, analysis, tools and frameworks to advance and measure the relevant priority. Promotes relevant science internally and externally for use in protection planning and execution.
  • Promotes strategic land conservation within TNC and stimulates protection of oceans, lands and waters globally.
  • Makes independent strategic decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgement to make progress on TNC’s protection outcomes.
  • Leads and manages a highly matrixed team that consists of multi-disciplinary staff who possess global expertise in conservation areas
  • May recruit, retain and manage high quality and effective multi-disciplinary staff and teams to assess legal, financial, reputational, and policy risks for issues related to ocean, land and water protection.
  • Ensures that programmatic commitments, financial standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Negotiate complex and innovation solutions with various parties.
  • Provide mechanism for organization wide dialogue, learning and capacity building on global priority issues.
  • Travel extensively within the US and abroad, sometimes for long periods of time, including evening and weekend work.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Work with current trends and practices in area of global priority, including a diversity of challenges across multiple global geographies.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in business, law, natural resource management or other relevant field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years’ experience, including 5 years’ experience at a senior level in international conservation field, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in partnership development (corporations, community leaders, governments, non-profit organizations, etc.) in multiple countries; experience with high-level government and conservation contacts.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance
  • Experience in linking science, policy and practice to achieve tangible conservation and policy outcomes.
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in ocean, land and water conservation globally.
  • Experience working collaboratively with interdisciplinary senior leadership.
  • Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team, including managing senior level leaders and driving toward results in a decentralized, highly matrixed and geographically dispersed organization.
  • Experience in evaluating and/or negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Experience working with the politics, society and environmental community on a global, international scale.
  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, including cultivation of major donors.
  • Fluency in English, written, spoken and graphical means.
  • Politically savvy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Graduate degree in business, law, natural resource management and/or other relevant field.
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical and business innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives and business / management experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Experience developing and implementing practical applications of landscape, watershed and seascape science and planning.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing, influencing, and implementing land and water public policy and conservation finance.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Good people skills and a team player.
  • Experienced in systems thinking and leadership.
  • Knowledge of diversity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace.
