The Global Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Analyst assists in the development and implementation of the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities strategy at TNC and helps drive implementation of key initiatives to help transform the way land and waters decisions are made by strengthening the voice, choice and action of indigenous peoples and local communities to shape and manage natural territory in ways that improve people’s lives and drive conservation outcomes. The Global IPLC Analyst specifically seeks to increase shared learning and collective action across TNC’s IPLC work around the world. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Global Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Analyst supports global strategy leadership by assisting with and/or managing priority projects focused on fostering learning and collective action across the Conservancy to better achieve our goals. They liaise with other TNC staff, notably field colleagues, as well as external actors as applicable, to help drive the implementation of the global strategy and associated projects in the places where TNC works.  They may advise TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to the global strategy or priority project(s) and related issues.

Specifically, the Global Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Analyst will play a leadership role in implementing and managing projects focused on:

  • Strengthening the Network for Strong Voice, Choice and Action – a network of TNC staff working on IPLC issues from distinct business units – by fostering decentralized leadership and increased engagement of diverse staff members
  • Creating learning opportunities and collective action across TNC’s work with indigenous peoples and local communities, including through designing and organizing virtual and in-person events 
  • Scoping a Center of Learning for Community-based Natural Resource Management with partners

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Leads and manages the Network for Strong Voice, Choice and Action, so that it is an effective platform for decentralized leadership of the IPLC strategy
  • Designs and organizes learning and collective action opportunities
  • Designs and organizes both small and very large virtual and in-person events that foster shared learning
  • Leads a process, in partnership with internal and external actors, to scope out the feasibility and design of a Global Center of Learning for Community-based Natural Resource Management
  • Provides project management support for key initiatives of the IPLC team
  • Provides strategic analysis in support of the conservation agenda for a key strategy area.
  • Co-designs, implements and directs complex and diverse projects encompassing multiple programs.
  • Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
  • Makes strategic decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • Significant latitude to deal directly with field management personnel and organizational leadership.
  • Develops reports, presentations and assessments on topics related to the global strategy for various audiences including preparing project updates for leadership and donor audiences.
  • Executes developmental evaluation programs to track effectiveness of key projects and adapt strategies and implementation.                       
  • Serves as a team leader for assigned projects; may require gaining cooperation of team over whom there is no direct supervisory authority. 
  • Works within a budget to complete projects, negotiates and contracts with vendors and assists with budget development.
  • Facilitates networks of (internal and external) practitioners to support improved capacity, uptake of proven approaches, implementation of common measures frameworks, increased connection and peer-peer support, collective action, and scaling up of indigenous and community work.
  • May involve domestic and international travel of 25% or more.
  • Applies social change, network and systems leadership approaches to key projects within the global strategy.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in business, environmental management, behavioral economics, sociology, political science, public policy, international development or related field
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience leading complex projects or strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment.
  • Experience facilitating networks, social change initiatives or aligning multiple actors around a common goal.
  • Experience managing complex projects involving several people. 
  • Experience compiling, researching, synthesizing, writing and editing project information for different audiences including promotion, project reporting, demonstration of innovative projects, and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated
  • Master’s degree.
  • Critical analytical thinking and excellent English writing skills are essential.
  • Familiarity and knowledge related to systems leadership, social change, network approaches, CBNRM, business, governmental, and/or environmental policy and practices.
  • Experience with developmental evaluation.
  • Experience running webinars 
  • Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context.  
  • Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization.   Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy.  Must be a team player.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines. 
  • NGO and/or indigenous peoples or local community leadership experience
  • Ability to write and speak in a language other than English, such as Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian highly desirable.
