The Global Ocean Team Fisheries Scientist provides technical and scientific leadership for conservation projects and initiatives under the Shared Conservation Agenda, FishPath, and other fisheries conservation activities and measures of conservation success (MOS). S/He reports to and supports the Global Fisheries Strategy Lead. Successful applicants must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. The preferred start date is July 15th, 2019.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Global Ocean Team Fisheries Scientist provides technical and scientific leadership for the Nature Conservancy’s FishPath priority and other related fisheries elements of TNC’s Shared Conservation Agenda. Working with the Global Ocean Fisheries Priority Lead, s/he helps drive implementation of the FishPath Strategy across the organization to achieve planned conservation outcomes.  The Fisheries Scientist will apply technical knowledge of fisheries-related scientific principles and practices to the implementation of FishPath engagements and the development of a FishPath capacity building network. S/He also conducts, data analyses, develops proposals to administer and coordinate fisheries projects within conservation or business units, writes peer-review manuscripts and conducts scientific research. S/He develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address fisheries management and to engage local communities and government agencies in resulting conservation efforts. S/He supports partnership development with academic leaders and institutions. The Fisheries Scientist position is part of the Global Ocean Team and will report to the Global Fisheries Strategy Lead.

The location for this position is negotiable, with a strong preference for an established TNC office. Successful applicants must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. No relocation or visa assistance is offered with this position. The preferred start date is July 15th, 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Provides scientific and technical leadership for the FishPath Strategy, underlying tools and frameworks.
  • Leads the development of innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address fisheries management challenges.
  • Working with the Global Ocean Fisheries Priority Lead and other TNC staff, fishing communities and fisheries agencies in key projects, leads elements of and supports the implementation of the Conservancy’s FishPath Strategy.
  • Designs, implements and directs complex and diverse projects encompassing multiple programs.
  • May manage a grant, contract or request for proposal.
  • Leads the design and development of the FishPath Coaches Network and assigned projects.
  • Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.                                                                                 
  • Works within a budget to complete projects, may negotiate and contract with vendors.
  • Involves domestic and international travel up to 25%.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
  • Experience negotiating.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • In-depth familiarity with the FishPath tool and engagement process.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in fisheries science and management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience, developing and implementing fisheries management plans and interpreting stock assessments for policy development.
  • Background and experience in stock assessment and fisheries modeling preferred.
  • Experience working in multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Knowledge of current science and practices in data limited stock assessment methods and fisheries management.
  • Training or teaching experience preferred.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience in fundraising preferred.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines.
