The Financial Specialist provides highly specialized finance/accounting-related services to a department or business unit.
The Finance Specialist is responsible for the management, maintenance and reporting of financial data for executive Business Units (BUs) including the CEO, President/Chief Conservation Office, and Chief Operations Office of the Nature Conservancy. S/He works closely with the management team and program managers to develop, monitor and maintain all financial information for assigned BUs, including the annual operating budget. S/He provides oversight of accounts payable, funds received and receivable, and staff expense reimbursements. Finance Specialist provides oversight and tracking of private service contracts. Duties may encompass a wide range of detailed accounting/financial transactions including general and subsidiary ledger entries, financial report preparation and reconciliation, budget preparation and monitoring, accounts payable, the preparation/processing of various accounting forms and reports such as journal entries. This person must be able to function productively as a member or leader of a work team and be able to work with and communicate with a wide range of staff. This position requires the ability to travel a few times each year and the ability to work longer hours during busy seasons. This position reports to a Senior Financial Analyst on the Financial Planning and Analysis Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Works toward meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating tactics for approved plans and completing day-to-day tasks.
- Coordinates projects.
- Ensures programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
- Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.
- May participate in complex negotiations.
- Experience with account entries, collecting and analyzing account information
- Experience recommending financial actions by analyzing options
- Can prepare financial statements and financial status information
- Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Experience with Accounting Standards (FASB).
- Familiarity with government regulations related to grants and contracts.
- Experience with relational databases.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
- Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data. Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of current trends in specific field.
- May require fluency in a foreign language to support global operations.
- MBA, CPA and/or CIA may be preferred.
