The Finance Manager provides specialized finance services to The Nature Conservancy's Global Strategy teams, colleagues and partners around the world. The primary focus of the position is to provide financial management and transactional services to coordinate and support needs and activities related to private awards. The position will work closely with project managers, as well as with Legal and Finance colleagues at the Conservancy, and requires a high-level of discretion, the ability assess issues and problem solve, advise on best practices, make autonomous decisions, and know when to escalate issues to management. A strong sense of customer services is essential. This position is part of a central Global Strategy Operations, Finance & People team. The desired location for this position is Arlington, VA; other TNC offices considered. No relocation assistance is available, and successful applicants must be eligibile to work in the US.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Finance Manager provides private awards management and general financial, accounting and information management services for global conservation teammates and leaders. This includes collaborating on proposals, coordinating the development of budgets and forecasts, tracking and analyzing actuals and variances, maintaining and supporting accounting activities and system processes, preparing reports for staff and donors, coordinating payables, contracts, subawards and other agreements, and ensuring that best practices and organizational policies and commitments are met, accurately and timely. They provide high level of expertise in private grant management and reporting and will be a primary point of contact for complex grants across multiple business units within the Conservancy. They will provide financial guidance and assistance to Conservation Managers related to proposals, grants, reporting and budget management and respond to complex employee/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of the subject area. They expeditiously and courteously respond to or route various inquiries from internal and external customers. The duties of the Finance Manager may expand to support additional aspects of global programs, as requested.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Works toward meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating tactics for approved plans and completing day-to-day tasks.
  • Coordinates projects.
  • Ensures programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field. 
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
  • May travel on occasion, both domestic and international.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Admin or related field and 4 years' related experience or equivalent combination
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Technical experience with general accounting practices and grants/award accounting issues.
  • Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems and preparing customized reports.
  • Experience with government regulations related to grants and contracts.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated. 
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience working within a complex matrix organization.
  • Experience creating/managing moderate to complex Excel spreadsheets and workbooks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience relating to international, leadership and other diverse clients.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills. Experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
