The Global Marketing Division operates at the center of The Nature Conservancy and spans multiple areas of functional expertise including: Global Communications, Global Digital, Global Membership, Marketing Creative & Content, Global Brand and Marketing Strategy, and Marketing Finance & Operations.

The Director, Global Strategic Communications leads a high-performance team to elevate the reputation, influence and visibility of The Nature Conservancy and to effectively communicate the impact and value of our global conservation strategies. The role requires exceptionally strong strategic communications, planning, presentation and executive management skills, bringing clarity to complex conservation strategies while inspiring action and impact among key audiences of reputation and influence.

Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Director, Global Strategic Communications leads specialized teams of conservation-focused global communications & content experts, and external media relations, while partnering with executive leadership, marketing and creative colleagues. Additionally, this role is highly engaged with rapid response, time-sensitive communications issues (including crisis communications) and highly responsive to deadline-driven media opportunities that elevate the Organization’s strategic communications goals and mission.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Director, Global Strategic Communications leads the Global Strategic Communications, Communications Content and Media Relations functions within the Marketing Business Unit of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and provides strategic vision and leadership for the Organization’s communication’s strategies.

This leadership role defines and crafts accessible and influential communications strategies to elevate the reputation and influence of our transformative global conservation priorities.  This includes the collaborative “workshopping” and crafting of conservation narratives, leadership of fully integrated communications plans, inclusive of external media strategies and the identification of key strategic communications “moments” to be amplified via marketing & digital engagement strategies and creative.  S/he is also responsible contributing positively to the advancement of marketing programs, strategic and crisis communications plans and synergies across the TNC.

This role will proactively identify and develop internal executive spokespeople, related messaging strategies and external digital/social and media profiles of key executives. S/he collaborates with TNC leadership in other regions & functions to engage media (including media, print, digital, television/video and influencer) to elevate awareness, engagement, influence conservation action.

This role serves on the Global Marketing and Communications Leadership Team and requires significant interaction with the Organization’s Executive Team.

This role manages departmental budgets and assures overall communications organizational goals are achieved.

Measurable KPI’s inclusive of OWNED, EARNED and PAID media will guide the measurement of impact and success of our Communications team.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Executive leadership of TNC’s communication strategies, narratives and messaging development to achieve the organization’s long-and short-term goals.
  • Elevates the Organization’s reputation, influence and visibility through the strategic use of external media outlets and high-profile media placement opportunities.
  • Collaborates with executive and senior-level stakeholders, including the Office of the CEO, on the development and implementation of communication plans and campaigns to elevate overall visibility and reputation.
  • Advise on risk and crisis management and lead the related internal/external communications strategies and outcomes.
  • Strategically identifies TNC executive spokespeople to elevate the external presence of TNC and our global conservation and organizational work.
    • Engages in executive presentation coaching & training
    • Cultivates and trains executive-level social media outreach and engagement
    • Develops external speaking strategies
    • Supports office of the CEO and CMO in relevant communications strategies
  • Broad management responsibility for a diverse group of globally dispersed administrative, professional, and management staff.
  • Financial management of department, including setting budget and supporting revenue objectives, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions.
  • Ensures alignment and compliance with TNC’s Brand Creative Guidelines relating to photography, creative “packaging” and brand creative point-of-view.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and minimum 10 years related work experience or an equivalent combination, including at least 5 years of senior management level experience in the marketing field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team, developing and fostering staff growth.
  • Experience cultivating and managing relationships with senior level executives, Board of Trustees, Board of Directors and/or external marketing contacts.
  • Experience developing marketing initiatives, plans and programs.
  • Experience in program management, including broad financial responsibility and measuring results of strategic plans and programs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related field or extensive professional experience.
  • Experience working for a for-profit company and non-profit organization.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating multifaceted strategic marketing, activation and partnership plans and programs.
  • Strong experience in internal communications and donor communications.
  • Excellent communications, public speaking, presentation, mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated, cross-cultural experiences preferred.
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, manage performance and help with conflict resolution on a large multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Proven ability in managing the fiduciary aspects of planning and delivery of annual budgets.
