Director of Board Relations is responsible for the execution of the Board of Directors program and engagement of individual Board members within the organization. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

In collaboration with Director of the Office of the President, the Director of Board Relations will collaboratively share responsibility for designing, developing, implementing, and monitoring initiatives associated with TNC’s Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Board.

The Director of Board Relations serves as the liaison between the Global Board of Directors, the President/CEO, and executive management. This position serves as the main point of contact for Board members and is responsible for supporting a leading non-profit governance program.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Oversees the development and delivery of all content and logistics related to Board events, such as quarterly meetings, conference calls, and field trips. In collaboration with the Chief Conservation Office, may be responsible for identifying and coordinating issues of conservation and strategy to be considered by the Board of Directors.
  • Manages the Board program budget and evaluates results, developing corrective strategies as needed.
  • Oversees the overall coordination of the four standing committees and ad-hoc committees of the Board.
  • Serves as the primary staff liaison to the Governance, Nominating and Human Resources Committee of the Board, including partnership on multi-year recruiting efforts.
  • Liaises with legal and finance departments to comply with and report on governance matters and fiduciary responsibilities of the Board, including ethics and compliance reviews, audit reports, and Board governance processes, amongst others.
  • Liaises with the Development team on stewardship and engagement of current and former Board members.
  • Maintains and disseminates information related to TNC’s Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Willingness to travel, work flexible hours, and to be available for Board members at all times, including holidays, nights, and weekends.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of professional experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Independent work ethic, resourcefulness, cooperative attitude, high energy and ethical standards.
  • Experience developing communication and engagement strategies.
  • Experience in program management, budget management, and measuring results of strategic plans.
  • Experience cultivating and managing relationships with senior level executives, Board of Directors, Boards of Trustees, or similar.
  • Politically savvy with ability to navigate through matrix organization to ensure completion of projects to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and written/verbal communication skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree and 10 years of professional experience.
  • Legal background and/or professional fundraising experience
  • Excellent mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the organization and management structure.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
  • Management experience that includes ability to lead, motivate, set objectives, and manage performance and conflict resolution.
