The Copywriter, Membership Communications, partners with all Membership programs and channels to research, conceptualize and deliver effective copy in support of strategic goals.
The Copywriter, Membership Communications, supports strategic Membership program goals by producing effective fundraising, engagement and activation communications. The writer is part of a 5-person Communications team that’s integral to deploying The Nature Conservancy’s innovative, best-in-class membership fundraising strategies. Team environment is fast-paced and dedicated to the Conservancy’s mission, while also prioritizing comradery, respect and joy in our role helping our supporters put their values in action through their charitable giving.
The copywriter is responsible for working closely with a variety of internal stakeholders on messaging and copy for email, lead generation, digital engagement, direct mail, search and display advertising, face-to-face canvassing, telemarketing, donor acknowledgements and member care. May also include researching, writing and editing long-form web features and other digital content. Contributes to emerging multi-channel and omni-channel communication strategies, including creating and maintaining story catalog and content resources. Responsible for delivering high-quality copy on deadline, sometimes with short turnaround times.
This position implements a continuum of messaging approaches that vary depending on specific prospect and member segments, while remaining consistent with the Conservancy’s brand positioning, mission and voice.
The copywriter works closely with Communications team colleagues to develop and refine concepts for campaigns and individual communications touchpoints. Also works with colleagues throughout the Conservancy to research and fact-check content and copy.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

- Does not supervise staff but will coordinate the work of peers.
- Resolves issues independently within program area.
- Works independently without requiring detailed management review of general work.
- Experience writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience consistently meeting deadlines with high-quality work product.
- Experience managing and delivering on multiple writing projects simultaneously.
- Experience writing or editing one or more of the following: direct marketing or fundraising communications, newsletter, magazine, annual report, web-site articles/stories, donor profiles, presidential acknowledgment letters, campaign brochures, funding proposals, fact sheets, presentations, or equivalent.
- Experience writing or editing.
- Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
- Experience with understanding of communications best practices specific to direct marketing and fundraising.
- Experience simplifying complex ideas and conservation strategies into user-friendly, accessible copy.

- Proven track record writing for digital channels to support conversion goals
- Experience and/or savvy with social media-forward campaigns.
- Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in fundraising and marketing.
- High level of comfort and aptitude with all basic office workplace technology, including MS Office.
- Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities.
- Experience leading or managing projects.
- Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
- Duties require non-routine research and follow-through.
- Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
- Work is performed in a typical office setting but may require willingness to work long hours as required.
- Ability to work under stress during peak workload periods.
