The Communications Manager I position is an integral part of the strategic communications team working to advance the North America Agriculture Program’s soil health and nutrient reduction goals.  The ideal candidate will proactively manage multiple projects and initiatives using integrated and coordinated tactics in the approved strategic communications plan for the North America Agriculture Program.  The Communications Manager I will sit on the marketing team for the North America Region Conservation Strategies and report up to the Associate Director of Communications for the North America Agriculture Program. This is a grant funded position for 3 years, with hopes of securing additional funding to extend the term of this position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Communications Manager I is a skilled project manager with the ability to oversee multiple projects that are part of a cohesive strategic communications plan in support of the North America Agriculture Program’s soil health and nutrient reduction goals. Working within a budget, the position will hire and manage outside vendors, including writers, designers and photographers to develop a range of materials – including case studies, photography, videos and feature stores – to amplify the North America Agriculture messaging aimed at a variety of audiences. The position will require editing and proofreading materials developed by vendors, as well as some creative writing. S/he will also work with colleagues throughout the organization as well as key partners to coordinate story collection, interviews with key stakeholders, and field assignments for photographers and writers. The position will also foster relationships with marketing teams across the organization to promote the materials throughout the organization’s media platforms. The Communications Manager I will be required to travel occasionally for team meetings and on field assignments.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Assists the Association Director of Communications in executing the strategic communications plan for the North America Agriculture Program.
  • Acts as a strong project manager who engages with cross-departmental teams to develop communications materials in support of program needs.
  • Work with vendors and external partners to execute projects/deliverables.
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting assigned project goals and objectives.
  • Translates complex scientific ideas and communicates it clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Duties are performed under general supervision and established guidelines.  
  • Acts independently on, and directs, specific tasks and projects.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Practical knowledge of current and evolving trends in strategic communications, sustainable agriculture and conservation.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment with internal and external partners
  • Proven project management success
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and negotiating agreements
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for various audiences from technical information
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Relevant technology skills to create presentations; design experience appreciated.
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
