The Nature Conservancy’s global Coastal Resilience strategy aims to provide underlying science and economic rationale to increase the use of nature to protect people, their property and local economies from the coastal risks they face.

The Coastal Risk and Resilience (CRR) unit leads a cutting-edge program that aims to conserve and restore coastal habitats for the protection they provide to people against the physical impacts of severe weather and climate change. The CRR team develops and applies innovative coastal resilience approaches, science and tools, including the use of insurance, risk modeling and community vulnerability assessments, to enhance the design, financing and implementation of nature-based solutions to coastal risk. Key partners include international and U.S. government agencies, academia and other NGO’s working in coastal resilience and climate risk, includes members of the insurance industry and other private sector organizations, and humanitarian organizations such as the International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent and others.

The Coastal Risk and Resilience (CRR) Program Manager supports the implementation and management of the Coastal Resilience strategy across The Nature Conservancy’s Global Ocean team and regional units by building strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and managing key partnerships to advance nature-based solutions to coastal risk. They will lead and/or manage small to large-scale complex projects and grants that may span multiple business units and country program. They will play a significant role in maintaining TNC’s leadership in the field of nature-based resilience for the protection of coastal communities. 

As part of The Nature Conservancy’s Global Ocean team, this position reports directly to the Director of Global Coastal Resilience and will be based in our World Office in Arlington, VA. Qualified applicants must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.  No relocation or immigration assistance is offered with this position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The CRR Program Manager supports global strategy leadership by leveraging their expertise in the management of coastal risk and serving as a technical resource for the CRR and regional teams. They will have key topical expertise in assessing climate vulnerability and risk in coastal areas, designing nature-based projects and/or developing innovative financing approaches to reduce risk using nature-based solutions. They will work to build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and manage key partnerships with public and private organizations. They be directly involved in several important and high-profile awards. They will participate in fundraising support activities and assess, propose and manage communication opportunities in coordination with the Director of Global Coastal Resilience.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Working within highly matrixed and globally dispersed teams, manages and implements multiple complex and diverse projects encompassing multiple programs, including managing project teams, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability;
  • Works within a budget to complete projects, negotiates and contracts with vendors and assists with budget development for the coastal resilience strategy.     
  • Manages engagement with internal and external partners related to coastal resilience and risk financing, and develops reports, presentations and assessments for communicating our engagement.
  • Facilitates capacity building for field programs related to the coastal resilience strategy.   
  • Incorporates cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives including insurance finance and vulnerability science.  
  • Builds cooperation from outside partners including NGOs, governments and private sector to accomplish program goals.
  • Supports the Director of Global Coastal Resilience in managing project budgets and assists with budget development related the Coastal Resilience Strategy and the CRR team;
  • Assists in the assessment and preparation of funding requests;
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance;
  • Frequently makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Requires willingness and ability to travel up to 25% both domestically and internationally.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and at least 5 years’ experience in conservation, finance, insurance, science, international development or related field, or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.  
  • Experience negotiating

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree and at least 5 – 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization and team.
  • Corporate sector/relations experience and/or human development, climate adaptation or disaster risk experience, experience with a major international organization in the humanitarian sector.
  • Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous: climate vulnerability assessment and science, coastal conservation and management, risk management/modeling, disaster risk reduction.
  • Experience researching, critically analyzing, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience writing and editing promotional, informational and reporting material.
  • Critical analytical thinking and excellent English writing skills are essential.
  • Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy.  
  • Experience working internationally.
  • Experience negotiating.
