Using strong analytical skills and sound legal and business judgment, the Attorney provides legal services under the supervision of a more experienced Conservancy attorney to advance Conservancy priorities and appropriately manage risk.
The Attorney provides legal services for the Conservancy’s Africa and Europe Regions, with primary emphasis on Africa and secondary emphasis on Europe. Ensures that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with the Conservancy’s mission, authority, policies, and procedures. Exercises independent judgment to clearly articulate legal concepts and options to assigned programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Drafts, negotiates, reviews, edits and approves a wide variety of contracts relating to the Conservancy’s work in Africa and Europe, including contracts for services, grants, memoranda of understanding, leases, licenses, easements, etc.
- Works with Paralegals and Certified Contract Specialists to manage the contract process and maintain contract templates and guidance.
- Collaborates with finance and operations staff to ensure that the Conservancy maintains good standing in all African and European countries where it operates.
- Works with program staff and Grant Specialists on applying for and managing public awards.
- Manages outside counsel effectively.
- Performs legal research regarding corporate, tax, contract and other issues affecting the Conservancy’s daily operations.
- Provides individual and group training to Conservancy staff.
- Provides support to Senior Attorneys who serve as primary points of contact for senior management in the Africa and Europe Regions.
- Assists in special projects as requested by department management.
- Travel occasionally; work long or flexible hours as needed.
- Verbal and written fluency in English.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
- Experience working across cultures.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years (2) of relevant legal experience.
- Fluency in Portuguese and/or French.
- Experience drafting and negotiating contracts and engaging in transactional work in Africa and/or Europe.
- Experience with government regulations related to grants and contracts.
- Experience in developing, directing, and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
- Experience providing legal support to non-US functions within a U.S. 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
- Experience working in either Africa and/or Europe.
- Experience identifying, evaluating and resolving issues, quickly and efficiently.
- Proven ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbally, in a professional setting.
