The Africa Trips and Events Manager will plan and oversee donor trips and events for TNC’s Africa Program. Trips are a key strategy for engaging existing and potential supporters of TNC’s work in Africa and are designed to provide a high-end, insider perspective of the local issues and key strategies TNC deploys to help further our mission. The Africa Trips and Events Manager will be responsible for planning 10-15 trips per year and will oversee event management as needed.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Africa Trips and Events Manager will work towards meeting the strategic priorities of the Africa Program by working with a team of TNC employees and external travel professionals to plan and execute donor trips to Africa. S/he must have excellent project management skills, communication skills and provide excellent customer service. S/he will work as part of the Africa Development Team to develop itineraries and written materials, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, adapt processes and participate in the enhancement of systems and tools used by the team. The Africa Trips and Events Manager will keep up-to-date on market trends and best practices in order to improve services. S/he will work in close coordination with Conservancy staff, vendors, donors, financial institutions, and legal and accounting professionals in the United States, Africa and other global regions. S/he will organize and coordinate diverse activities, project outcomes, and implement solutions in consultation with leadership. The Africa Trips and Events Manager will report to the Africa Development Program Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Act independently to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Coordinate and manage projects with several variables, set realistic deadlines, and manage a timeline.
  • Decisions may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
  • Implement and manage new initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide strategic goals and strategies are achieved.
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
  • Travel occasionally, work long and flexible hours as needed.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience planning trips and events.
  • Experience managing complex projects.
  • Experience generating reports and analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Experience working across departments and with a cross-functional team.
  • Experience using existing technology to achieve desired results.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience working remotely and across time zones.
  • Ability to implement complex processes.
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff.
  • Experience interpreting guidelines to achieve desired results.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Knowledge of current travel trends.
  • Basic understanding of fundraising principles.
  • Strong organization and negotiating skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Successful experience implementing strategic program goals.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles.
