The Africa Development Communications Manager works closely with the Africa Development Team to implement and coordinate effective written communications for donors and prospects, including corporate, foundation, and individual donors. This position can work from anywhere in the United States. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Development Communications Manager is responsible for developing written communications for major and principal level donors to the Africa Region. The position works closely with the Africa Associate Director of Development Communications and the larger Africa Development Team to provide quality content and compelling written information for donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship materials. The Development Communications Manager involves and engages appropriate partners in the field, Africa Region staff, leadership staff and fundraising professionals across the organization to share communications and compose written materials and reports for supporters of the Africa Region. The ability to positively manage peer relationships is a critical aspect of the position. The Development Communications Manager is required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and understands and complies with all gift related policies and procedures of The Nature Conservancy. S/he reports to the Director of Development for the Africa Region and assists the Africa Region in meeting or exceeding annual fundraising goals between $15 and $25 million.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Act independently and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
  • Financial responsibility includes meeting fundraising objectives.
  • Manage assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and setting deadlines.
  • Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
  • Occasionally travel and work long and flexible hours as needed.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in writing and editing and good verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in writing successful solicitation proposals of $25,000 or more.
  • Experience setting priorities, organizing and managing diverse activities and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in interviewing, researching, and compiling information from many sources.
  • Experience use existing technology to achieve desired results.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience. Basic understanding of and passion for conservation work in Africa and developing countries.
  • Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
  • Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate colleagues, donors and volunteers.
