Join our Global Oceans Team as the Managing Director of Strategic Initiatives for Global Oceans at The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The Global Oceans Team is a diverse team of thought leaders, scientists, policy and other conservation staff focused on transforming how the world manages its oceans. This includes a focus on investing in natural infrastructure, such as coral reefs and wetlands, to reduce climate risks and sustain ocean health; promoting sustainable fisheries management and legal fish trade; and managing and protecting ocean and coastal habitats in ways that continue to provide benefits to nature and people.
The Managing Director, Global Oceans Strategic Initiatives works closely with the Managing Director, Oceans in overseeing all aspects of the Global Oceans Team strategies including alignment with the TNC global challenge framework and Shared Conservation Agenda. S/he will be responsible for building strong internal TNC partnerships in order to ensure the execution of the Oceans strategy globally across multiple programs and business units. S/he will assist the Managing Director to oversee management of the Global Oceans Team staff.
The location for this position is either the TNC London, U.K. office or our World Office in Arlington, VA. To work in the London office, qualified candidates must have valid authority to work in the U.K. . This position is not eligible for relocation benefits.
The Managing Director, Global Oceans Strategic Initiatives reports directly to the Managing Director, Oceans. S/he will manage a multi-disciplinary team which works on a global scale to ensure the efficient and effective implementation of internal and cross boundary initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Work closely with Global Managing Director, Ocean to ensure alignment of Oceans Team strategies and the organizational mission.
- Work closely with global Managing Director to define and develop long term Ocean strategies for the Oceans Team.
- Synthesize all GOT strategies to ensure clarity of purpose and progress relative to the Shared Conservation Agenda.
- Support the Global Managing Director to build a highly effective team with an emphasis on leadership and team management.
- Create synergy between the GOT and programs/business units across the organization globally to ensure that the strategies are effective and successful.
- Manage multi-disciplinary staff with responsibility for performance management, training and career development.
- Makes strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience and judgment.
- May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 7 years of experience at a senior level.
- Conservation knowledge and experience.
- Supervisory experience with multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating work of others including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Project management experience, including meeting strict deadlines and managing budgets.
- Management and leadership skills of both projects and people.
- Experience in partnership development and influencing across functions and/or on a global level.
- Experience networking with high level conservation contacts.
- Proficient communication and presentation skills.
- Experience presenting to diverse internal and external groups.
- Experience working in a highly matrixed organization.
- Fundraising experience and skills.
- Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative plans and initiatives involving multiple countries.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree highly preferred.
- Prefer at least 10 years of relevant experience.
- Ocean conservation knowledge and experience.
- Project Management certification.
- Experience delivering practical, adaptable products and services.
- Politically savvy.
