The Economist I provides technical and scientific support to teams across the Nature Conservancy as a subject matter professional on economic and behavioral issues related to environmental conservation. S/he is a member of the Economics Team in the Office of the Chief Scientist and works collaboratively on behavioral and economic questions of strategic importance to the Nature Conservancy. S/he has research experience in topics such as behavioral economics, program evaluation, causal experiments and applied econometrics, including spatial econometrics. The position is open to economists with research interests in topics relevant to the Nature Conservancy (forests and biodiversity, water, climate change etc). The location for this pisition is flexible.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Economist I serves as a core member of the Economics team in the Office of the Chief Scientist. S/he undertakes economics research to build the evidence-base for different conservation approaches, evaluate the effectiveness of policy instruments and test behavioral strategies that may strengthen environmental interventions. S/he would be expected to work with the Lead Economist to design research studies in mutiple environmental areas, undertake literature reviews and meta analyses and collect and analyze quantitative data. S/he uses communication strategies, analytical support and training to enhance the application of economics in TNC’s global and regional activities. S/he collaborates with other scientists within and outside TNC and presents and publishes research results.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.
- May participate in cross-functional teams.
- May manage a grant, contract or write a request for proposal.
- Maintains scientific credibility through peer reviewed publications, research and communication.
- Interprets guidelines, evaluates information and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the program.
- Provides a variety of socio- economics research information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.
- Provides training for internal and external colleagues on socio-economic and conservation scientific principles.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D in behavioral economics, applied economics or environmental economics, with 2-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
- Strong knowledge of common statistical software applications.
- Experience designing and implementing socio-economic research
- Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in multi-cultural/multi-group settings
- Ability to communicate research results to non-technical groups
- Knowledge on valuation techniques and social dimensions of natural resource management
- Proven negotiation skills.
- Experience managing smaller projects including financial aspects and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
- Training experience.
