Under the direction of the VP Healthy Living & Social Responsibility, and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the Ann Arbor YMCA, this position supports the Y Positive Play Initiative (YPPI) “Y on the Fly" work under the Positive Play of Southeast Michigan- Equipment Sharing Project. The work is primarily defined as a mobile youth development program that, through mobilization, increases youth access to sports sampling and ‘free play’. The incumbent must demonstrate, through performance, the four (4) core values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and help represent the YMCA mission, policies, character development, HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) standards and Global Learning objectives. The YPPI ‘Y on the Fly’ Director is responsible for staff recruitment, training and supervision, fiscal management, and development and expansion of the Y on the Fly program.  

This is a grant funded position for three (3) years with potential for renewal.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists the VP Healthy Living & Social Responsibility in identifying and cultivating partnerships with libraries, park and recreation systems, churches and other community organizations to establish creative spaces that expand the reach of the Y on the Fly program. 
  • Represents the YMCA as an ambassador for the Y on the Fly program. Serves as the YMCA nominated representative for the Community Advisory Councils in Ypsilanti and Pinckney. Maintains strong communication with site location contacts and community partners. 
  • Coordinates scheduling and programming of Y on the Fly mobile sites for the Ann Arbor YMCA for YPPI-PPSEMI Equipment Sharing project. 
  • Responsible for hiring, on-boarding and supervision of all program staff, both school-year and summer. Provides direction, sets and evaluates program goals and objectives for the Y on the Fly team and supervises the work of the Y on the Fly Asst Director and part-time seasonal staff. 
  • Develops and delivers training for YMCA program staff and volunteers including program specific training, as well as training related to HEPA initiatives and the CATCH curriculum. Acquires and maintains necessary trainer-level certifications in CATCH and HEPA framework.  
  • Supervises mobile site team(s), day-to-day program activities to meet the needs of the community, specifically related to the objectives of YPPI-Y on the fly Mobile and PPSEMI for the Ann Arbor YMCA.
  • Provides sport usage demonstrations and coordinates sport-sampling calendars with community stationary partners. 
  • Works with Communications Director to promote Y on the Fly program and other related YMCA initiatives and programs, seeking new opportunities to expand programming and increase community engagement and awareness of YMCA programs.
  • Responsible for collection of participants information and enrollment date. Provides metrics and information related to the YPPI-PPSEMI Y on the Fly program to grantors and partners. Submits expense reports and annual written reports to Regional Program Director / YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, CFSEM and RCWF.
  • Oversees distribution of program information inclusive of organizing and scheduling program sites and ensuring front line staff follow all policies and procedures. 
  • Responsible for determining supplemental needs of Y on the Fly sites that will be included in the Y on the Fly mobile site programming for the project, inclusive of the required supplies on each van, snacks, parent education materials etc. 
  • Works collaboratively with internal departments/programs within the Ann Arbor YMCA to implement the YPPI- Y on the Fly mobile program objectives and goals.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment when dealing with daily issues in a variety of situations and with people of all socioeconomic levels. 
  • Possesses working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
  • Under the supervision of the VP Healthy Living & Social Responsibility, this position will develop and be responsible for executing related program budgets related to the Y on the Fly program. Submits monthly expense reports to the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. 
  • Work with Communications/Donor Relations Director to develop and refine program brochures and all related releases and marketing efforts as necessary. 
  • Assist with the delivery of Healthy Kids Day activities. 
  • Assist with the Annual Campaign; recruit volunteers for Y on the Fly Team.
  • Assist with Association special events as assigned. 
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Athletics or related field is required. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • One to three years of YMCA or related experience in staff supervision of community-based programs is required. 
  • Minimum age requirements apply; minimum age of 21.
  • Team Leader certification is preferred or commitment to attain within 2 years.
  • Must be capable of using MS Office software; Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 30 days of employment. Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications must be attained within 90 days. 
  • Certifications in CPR & First Aid are required and must be maintained. Must be able to acquire trainer-level certifications in CATCH / HEPA within 6 months of hire date. 
  • Must successfully pass background check and complete YMCA Child Abuse Safety training prior to employment.
  • Must have use of reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Must successfully pass requirements to be placed on YMCA’s motor vehicle insurance. Ability to obtain a chauffeur’s driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of traditional and non-traditional sports such as Futsal, Lacrosse, frisbee golf and others is preferred.
  • Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, budget development & fiscal management, and life spans of programs are a necessity. 
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, supervisory skills, and initiative in program development. 
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as a willingness to learn, second language is a plus.
  • Demonstrated capacity and exposure working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. 
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $35,988.00 - $39,987.00
