The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the full-time position of Director to take the lead on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in the Netherlands. The Director is responsible for raising €4M annually. The Director is based in Amsterdam and reports to the Managing Director based in London.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Build financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from supporters;
  • Manage and oversee the development and outreach strategy for the Netherlands and the two-person development and outreach team in the Netherlands;
  • Oversee fundraising, outreach and cultivation events including HRW’s annual Voices for Justice dinner, conferences, researcher briefings, privately hosted dinners, and other events;
  • In collaboration with the Committee leadership, manage all aspects of the Netherlands Committee including organizing regular committee meetings, sub-committee meetings and communications and working with leadership and members to develop fundraising, outreach and cultivation initiatives and to engage their networks;
  • Research, identify, cultivate, steward and solicit prospective donors and existing supporters;
  • Work with the Foundations team to research, identify, cultivate, steward and solicit prospective foundations and existing foundations;
  • Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;
  • Identify new outreach opportunities and form relationships with partner organizations;
  • Work in close partnership with the Media Officer to coordinate HRW’s messaging and communications within the Netherlands and to engage with the media when appropriate;
  • Work in close partnership with the Deputy Executive Director for Advocacy to coordinate HRW’s advocacy work in the Netherlands and to engage with advocacy targets when appropriate;
  • Administer HRW’s legal entity in The Netherlands including filing annual reports, convening meetings and working with legal counsel;
  • Oversee income tracking, expenditure budgets and regularly monitor the department budget to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
  • Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development department;
  • Ensure organization-wide coordination and complementarity as well as maintain good working relationships with external partners; and
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in human rights or philanthropy is desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English and Dutch are required.
  • Proven success in creating and managing major gifts programs and highly skilled at managing high-level donor relationships are required.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing large fundraising events, such as annual dinners and smaller bespoke events is required.
  • Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are essential.
  • An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with fundraising in the Netherlands is strongly preferred.
