The Controller and Director of Financial Planning & Analysis is responsible for providing accounting leadership and direction for Proteus Fund and Proteus Action League (PAL). S/he advises the CFO on all significant accounting and reporting matters, and partners with all other leadership to develop and implement sound accounting procedures and processes across the organization. S/he is responsible for accounting, audit, tax, financial reporting, budget management, forecasting needs, and ensures the appropriate accounting and technological infrastructure to support a complex organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Accounting Management and Administration
- Implement appropriate accounting management over the General Ledger, and oversight of the monthly account reconciliation processes
- Develop and maintain effective internal accounting control policies and procedures to ensure the safety and accuracy of multi-dimensional and complex financial records
- Monitor the performance of financial management technology and ensure adequate training for staff and effective use of the technology across the organization
- Develop documentation for accounting management functions across the organization
- Manage the monthly closing process
- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of internal and external financial reporting
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Coordinate annual budget process. Work with all staff on individual program budgets as well as budgets for departments and units of the organization.
- Prepare monthly budget to actual reporting by program and business unit
- Discuss budget to actual analysis with program management
- Oversee cash flow and forecasting. Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism; work with CFO, COO and all senior leaders responsible for projects and programs on use of cash flow tools; ensure availability of funds across the organization and within programs as needed.
- Develop and utilize financial models, financial analysis, financial plans and forecasts
- Respond to funder requests for non-standard reporting and provide guidance to both finance and partnership teams on such requests
- Respond to other inquiries from funders as appropriate
Audit, Tax Filing & State Reporting
- Oversee creation of annual financial statements and supporting audit reports
- Coordinate annual audits and proper filing of 990 tax returns with IRS and State governments
- Manage relationship with auditor and seek regulatory advice as appropriate
- Complete State reports in coordination with HR and with legal counsel
Finance Operations
- Supervise the work of the general accounting function, monthly financial closing activities, report creation and financial data management
- Mentor and develop the Finance team, manage work allocations, training, problem resolution, performance evaluations and build an effective team dynamic.
COMPETENCIES
- Deep knowledge of non-profit accounting and experience in preparing and monitoring large budgets
- Deep knowledge of reporting functions for both budget to actual reporting as well as management reporting
- Experience with Financial Edge is preferred
- Strong analytical, planning, problem solving and evaluation skills and strong verbal and written communication skills
- Leadership ability, team management and interpersonal skills
- Excellent excel analytical abilities i.e., tables, pivot and lookup functions
- Experience with information technology to manage finance and accounting software
- Attention to detail, and ability to follow through.
- Ability to multi-task and adapt to a fast-paced, deadline driven, sometimes-stressful environment.
- Excellent project management skills
- Experience in philanthropy/philanthropic accounting, regulatory issues, etc.
- Evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination or analysis, experience and judgement; high level of business acumen
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Finance or other Bachelor of Science with accounting certifications in the area of financial accounting, and exposure to other areas of accounting – audit, legal and tax accounting.
- Seasoned leader with at least five years of broad finance experience for a complex non-profit
- In addition to the required education, a Certified Public Accountant and/or a candidate with an MBA is preferred
