The Seasonal Land Steward will spend approximately 80% of their time in this short-term position working outside in the field on one of the 42 nature preserves in the eastern part of New York State. Most of this time will be spent working in the Albany and Hudson Valley areas, with more infrequent work at preserves near Westchester County. This seasonal position is expected to be for a period of 10-12 weeks.
There will be ample opportunities to learn new skills, take a leadership role in project planning and management, and gain experience in the fields of conservation, land management, and forestry.
The Seasonal Land Steward will assist Stewardship Coordinators with preserve maintenance and enhancement. This includes clearing trails, marking trails, building trails and trail infrastructure, maintaining parking lots, trash collection, walking/posting boundaries, and interacting with the public. There may be opportunities to lead volunteer work crews in general stewardship tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- May interact with visitors.
- Works under close or infrequent supervision.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Will work with small engines regularly which can include brush cutters, lawn mowers, chain saws and pumps.
