Context: The Conservation Program Associate provides assistance and administrative support for the Chapter’s conservation and legislative campaigns. Additionally, the Associate has the opportunity to organize and implement a conservation program, campaign or initiative such as energy democracy, wetlands, water issues, toxics, waste (incineration/zero waste), and Adirondack issues.
Scope: The Chapter Conservation Program Associate works full-time in the Albany office under the general supervision of the Chapter Chair. Assists the other Chapter Conservation Program staff to further the Chapter's legislative and conservation goals. Acts as general Chapter Associate and deals with volunteer leaders and the public to provide information on the Club's activities and issues. Works in collaboration with other Chapter staff and with the National Sierra Club staff based in NYS.
- Assist other Chapter staff (State Conservation Director and Conservation Development & Program Manager) and Chapter volunteer leadership in developing and implementing campaign strategies for conservation programs and projects in accordance with the Chapter policy.
- Work with staff, volunteer leaders and other interest groups to identify, recruit and organize volunteers for conservation campaigns.
- Work with volunteers on specific environmental campaigns at the Chapter and sometimes at Group level. Travel to meet with volunteer leaders in their home districts/groups.
- Advocate the Sierra Club position on proposed environmental legislation and regulations and conservation campaigns with elected officials, governmental agencies, coalition partners, and other stakeholders. Make oral presentations and draft action alerts, newsletter and website articles, and press releases to keep the Club membership and general public informed.
- Provide support to the Chapter Legislative Committee.
- Help train interns and oversee their work.
- Attend Chapter Executive Committee meetings at least two times per year.
- Develops and maintains expertise in professional field by reading current literature, and attending seminars, conferences, and meetings when possible.
- Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- One year relevant work experience. Candidates with prior experience in lobbying and grassroots organizing preferred.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Basic knowledge of and interest in the legislative, administrative and political processes in NYS
- Familiarity with environmental issues
- Proficient computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, internet, social media are required. Previous experience with Salesforce, Drupal, SmartVAN is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively working with volunteers
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required
