Advocacy Intern II

The New York State Office is looking for an intern to assist its busy office with advocacy-related work and volunteer management.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Advocacy/Lobbying:

  • Assist in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts;
  • Analyze policy, programs and regulations that affect the 50+ population;
  • Assist in the planning and executing of community outreach events;
  • Support the production and dissemination of correspondence with volunteers, members, activists and the legislature;
  • Work directly with volunteers and staff to represent AARP at local events, including forums, news conferences and rallies spotlighting AARP issues;
  • Conduct online searches in support of legislative issues and assist with grassroots organizing;
  • Monitor publications and news media for legislative issues of interest;
  • Deliver educational and advocacy materials to legislative and/or campaign offices;
  • Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research, as needed; and
  • Research candidates and related events;
  • Support the production and dissemination of correspondence with volunteers, members, activists and the legislature;
  • Assist with legislative voter guides; and
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Volunteer Management:

  • Assist with recruitment, organization and engagement of volunteers;
  • Review applications and conduct volunteer interviews; and
  • Develop and strengthen project management skills, volunteer coordination skills and grassroots organizing.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising first or second year graduate students.

  • Good and professional communicator (both over the phone and in writing)

  • Team player
  • Enthusiastic
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Interes in issues/policy relating to aging, health care, utilities, and/or financial security
  • Interest or experience with the state legislative process is a plus, but not a requirement
Compensation/Benefits: 

Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
