Responsible for the direction, operation and supervision of the fitness department including the fitness center, group exercise classes and health & wellbeing programs. Will provide direct leadership for the promotion and delivery of Group Exercise and Personal Training programs.  Must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead a team that is focused on providing superior member experience at all times. Will be accountable for member engagement and retention initiatives relative to the fitness center and related programming.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Direct responsibility and management of the center’s Group Exercise program.
  • Directs and manages operations of the Fitness Department via oversite of the Fitness Coordinator.  Responsible for development and scheduling of the fitness center and Personal Training programs.
  • Ensure the safety, cleanliness and function of the Fitness Center, group exercise room(s), multipurpose room(s), climbing wall (where applicable) and equipment.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers within the Fitness Department.  Provide leadership and communication with staff to provide a high level of member engagement and customer service to ensure the needs of the members are met.
  • Engage members in FitQuest to assist in member retention and achieve the center's monthly goals and annual objectives.
  • Implement Association Member Engagement Programs as directed 
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and participation in health and well-being programs.
  • Monitor the achievement of the annual objectives for the fitness coaches and personal trainers; take appropriate measures and develop strategies to motivate associates to ensure the objectives are met. 
  • Prepare the annual budget for the Fitness and Personal Training Departments.  Exercise the necessary controls to ensure budgetary requirements are met.
  • Participate in association Fitness Product Team and trainings.  Follow the program standards and quality guidelines as outlined by the Fitness Product Team.
  • Participate as an integral member of the center management team to provide consistent and quality service standards to include shared responsibility for the day-to-day center operations and participation in manager on duty shifts, center and association special events and other leadership duties as assigned.
  • Assist in achieving center's Give Every Child A Chance Annual Support goal to include the Send A Kid to Camp Campaign, Turkey Trot and other fundraising campaigns and events.
  • Assist the Y of Central Maryland in achieving the 2020 Strategic Plan and subsequent strategic plans.
  • Follow all Y of Central Maryland policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Assist in all areas as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience in Health & Well-being field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of supervisory and program development experience in above mentioned field, to include Group Exercise and/or Personal Training
  • Experience in fiscal management, member service & engagement and facility management.
  • Experience in leading fitness operations of 3,500+ household unit Y or similar fitness size fitness center
