Director, Institutional Giving

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation of best practice fundraising knowledge, with a track record of fostering successful long-term relationships with foundations. S/he will be a hard-worker who is motivated by the NPR mission to achieve significant fundraising goals and thrive in a fast-paced, creative, results-oriented culture. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage and facilitate institutional donor involvement for a portfolio of approximately 45 donors and prospects capable of grants at $100,000 to $750,000 and higher.
  • Design fundraising strategies for the portfolio and determine appropriate steps for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, using moves management tools and fundraising best practices to ensure prospects and donors are moving through the appropriate prospect cycle.
  • Contact prospective funding sources and follow up with appropriate actions such as preparing senior NPR staff for prospective donor meetings through written and/or oral briefings, and schedule and attend meetings and presentations.   
  • Interact with funders over the phone, e-mail, and in person (including up to 25% travel), to develop and deepen relationships through both formal and informal stewardship.
  • Research, identify and cultivate new sources of funding.
  • Gather information and draft or oversee proposals, correspondence and other accompanying materials, including budgets.
  • Assist with and oversee gathering information and drafting of interim and final reports on deadline, including submission of financial reports.
  • Update and maintain files and/or database to reflect contacts with funders.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to establish and achieve revenue goals and to meet deadlines.
  • Initiate and participate in project development discussions with staff from other divisions. Develop a thorough knowledge of digital and on-air program offerings and initiatives at NPR.
  • Where appropriate, collaborate with Member stations on strategies and requests to prospects who might support both local and national efforts, to encourage collaborative gifts.
  • Provide a sounding board for Member stations on all fundraising matters, assist Member stations (to the extent possible or appropriate) with their fundraising aspirations, and encourage partnership at all levels.
  • Work collaboratively with other Development Division staff by sharing materials in order to improve the quality of the division’s materials. 
  • Work in partnership with the CDO and Executive Director on strategy and implementation of a comprehensive, national campaign for NPR.
  • Monitor new grant-making activity and changing developments in philanthropy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as an appropriate representative of NPR and its member stations with all audiences, exemplifying fundraising best practices and a high level of ethics in all activities.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree or professional certification a plus.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of four to six years of front line fundraising experience in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated fundraising success of grants over $250,000 and annual fundraising of over $2 million.
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent writing and editing skills, preferably in the area of development and/or grant writing.
  • Ability to eloquently articulate NPR’s mission and programs, and show passion for the mission of NPR.
  • Proven ability to strategically and effectively build relationships and partnerships with foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including NPR administrative and volunteer leadership, donors, colleagues, and member stations.
  • Must possess good judgment and exercise diplomacy in dealing with a variety of constituents.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work appropriately and adapt easily to changing priorities. Able to apply strategic and creative thinking, while being persistent, motivated and energetic, along with the ability to work in detail-oriented fashion.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more national capital campaigns is a plus.
  • Must be willing and able to manage up to 25% travel as needed.
