The Advisor for Education in Emergencies will lead Save the Children’s Education in Emergencies technical program. The EiE program is comprised of awards from both USG and private donors, implemented in 15-20 countries, and includes thought leadership activities within Save the Children and external Education in Emergencies forums. S/he will provide thought leadership to this program, working with the Director, Education in Emergencies, to set technical priorities, develop and test technical resources, and set the research agenda for the Education in Emergencies program. She will maintain key relationships within Save the Children and with the Director for Education in Emergencies will represent Save the Children US to external audiences. Along with the Director for Education in Emergencies and other team members supporting the EiE portfolio, she will provide direct technical support to projects and lead fundraising efforts.
Areas of Responsibility:
Technical leadership and program development (30%)
- Lead the conceptualization and creation of technical packages identified in the EiE strategic plan, applying a deep understanding of technical subject matter to create resources that position Save the Children as a thought leader in the Education in Emergencies field.
- Lead the creation of a research, monitoring and evaluation plan to test and refine technical packages in collaboration with internal and external education researchers.
- Represent Save the Children in high-level global Education in Emergencies technical networks and working groups and with donor representatives to advance Save the Children’s technical and advocacy objective, and to reinforce Save the Children’s strategic position in the marketplace.
- Advise the Senior Director, Basic Education, and the Associate Vice President, DECP, on Education in Emergencies issues.
Program Delivery (40%)
- Oversee the technical quality of program delivery, continuously evaluating the quality of Save the Children’s emergency education activities, and developing strategies to improve technical quality when needed.
- Provide technical assistance to ensure excellence in all areas of the Education in Emergencies portfolio, applying state of the art technical approaches with education leaders within Save the Children offices and UN, government and other civil society members.
- Serve as the Education in Emergencies technical lead for large-scale Category 1/2 humanitarian responses, determining appropriate EiE content and developing technical resources as needed, delivering technical capacity building training for field teams, and supporting humanitarian fundraising efforts with public and private donors.
Fundraising (25%)
- Lead proposal development, including proposal design and writing responsibilities for the Education in Emergencies program, including US government, private and global accounts (UNHCR, Dubai Cares, etc.).
- Position Save the Children as a partner of choice with potential donors and partners.
Program Management (5%)
- Support the Director, Education in Emergencies, with annual planning and quarterly reporting processes for the Department of Education and Child Protection.
- Respond to information requests for the EiE program.
- Represent the EiE program on key technical subjects to internal audiences, including other DECP education teams, Child Protection, Public Policy and Advocacy, and SCI’s Education Global Theme.
Educational Background:
Bachelor degree in education or relevant field with relevant technical expertise;
Skills/Experience:
- 7 to 10 years of experience including experience in the emergencies sector, including early-onset humanitarian response;
- Recognized leadership in the education in emergencies sector and the ability to represent effectively organizational priorities and interests;
- Ability to travel internationally up to 30% time;
- Demonstrated technical leadership through the strategic issues identification and the creation of related technical resources;
- Proven technical knowledge in education
- Proven skills with proposal development for donors, including leadership of USAID technical design and writing processes;
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting from a technical, management, and interpersonal perspective;
- Strong interpersonal, oral and especially written communication skills, including strong public speaking skills and experience;
- Ability to problem-solve, take decisions in a timely manner, multi-task, determine priorities, take initiative, and work independently;
