Senior Director, Preparedness, Recovery and Resilience

Save the Children is recognized as a national leader in ensuring children’s wellbeing before, during and after domestic emergencies. The Senior Director for Preparedness, Recovery and Resilience leads Save the Children US Programs' efforts to ensure that children are safe and protected – both during emergencies and through our long-term programs. The Senior Director is responsible for strategic leadership, program design and implementation, quality improvement, and external representation across our Humanitarian Response and Child Protection program portfolios.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Lead Preparedness, Recovery and Resilience strategy for US Programs & Advocacy Division

  • Develop coherent approach across Preparedness, Recovery and Resilience programmatic areas and identify opportunities for synergies.
  • Work with USPA leadership to ensure alignment of goals, strategies and interventions across program portfolio.
  • Work with Humanitarian and Child Protection specialists from international and domestic programs to learn from and integrate best practices in our US programs.
  • Work with RD and MCM to ensure visibility and resourcing of Humanitarian and Child Protection programming in the US.
  • Work with advocacy colleagues to maintain our role as a leading voice for children before, during and after and emergency.

Expand reach of Preparedness/Disaster Risk Reduction programs

  • Develop training models that support implementation at scale
  • Implement strategies to strengthen surge capacity, including creating volunteer networks and establishing a REDI team to provide consistent technical and functional leadership during a domestic emergency response.
  • Maintain and grow strategic partnerships, including American Red Cross, emergency management organizations and VOAD networks.

Coordinate with Department of Humanitarian Response (DHR) to ensure effective implementation of Domestic Emergency response programs

  • Execute action plan to integrate recommendations from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria response reviews into standard operating procedures.
  • Co-develop and co-lead transition plans for future emergency responses, to ensure seamless handover from DHR.
  • Build staff capacity within US Programs and Advocacy division to support and lead emergency responses.

Oversee domestic recovery program, with a focus on recovery programming in Hurricane Harvey, Irma and Maria

  • Oversee the continued development of psychosocial support programming, including the evidence-based Journey of Hope program.
  • Strengthen position as national leader in childcare recovery, post emergency.
  • Manage execution of sub-awards and steward strategic stewardships.
  • Track new funding opportunities and monitor spending against current budgets to ensure timely closeout of responses.

Lead integration of psychosocial, child protection and preparedness programming into long term development programs

  • Liaise with Education and Early Childhood program leads to support enhancements of ESSS and school-aged programs.
  • Work with StriveTogether community partners to incorporate psychosocial, child protection and preparedness programming identified by needs assessments.
  • Monitor and respond to trends in the fields of psychosocial support, child protection and disaster risk reduction – including domestic violence and opioid abuse.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  • You have a minimum 10-15 years' experience in in emergency management, psychosocial support, child development or other related field.
  • You have a strong Level of technical and/ or managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to lead a Unit or Team, or provide the technical advice, guidance and direction related to various size programs and grants
  • Experience designing and delivering programs in a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills and ability to build and navigate relationships across levels and locations.
  • The ability to work independently and lead multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of Save the Children and familiarity with Domestic Emergency response and recovery work are preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field a plus.
