The Senior Associate Director of Philanthropy (“Sr. ADoP”) reports to the Director of Philanthropy (“DoP”) and leads the team of font-line fundraisers within the Washington Philanthropy team to develop and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects with an emphasis on securing 6- and 7-figure gifts to achieve $12M-$20M per year in major gift support .
Management (50%)
- The Sr. ADoP maintains an expert knowledge of factors influencing philanthropic giving, and understands and applies complex principles of major and principal gift fundraising in their own portfolio work and in their oversight of the fundraising team. In close collaboration with the DoP, they focus on long-range strategic priorities, set business processes and guidelines related to the work of the team. The Sr. ADoP supervises and develops a talented team of fundraising professionals, and is responsible for recruitment and performance management. They establish and monitor fundraising objectives, activity benchmarks and measures of success for fundraisers, providing consultation, guidance and training based on best practices.
Fundraising (50%)
- The Sr. ADoP personally manages a prospect portfolio of up to 30 accounts, coordinating or making direct asks in support of local and global priorities, with a focus on 6- and 7-figure donors and an annual goal of at least $2M. They are responsible for prospect identification and qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The Sr. ADoP liaises with various teams and business units across The Nature Conservancy, senior management, trustees, committees, and external consultants to balance stakeholder needs and coordinate fundraising efforts, serving as a moves manager as appropriate. They can articulate the Conservancy’s global priorities and work within a campaign at an advanced level. They understand organizational and project financials, have an advanced knowledge of charitable giving, and discuss complex charitable options with donors.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
Level of Position: The Sr. ADoP is a senior manager for the Washington Chapter, with broad management and financial responsibilities.
- Broad management responsibility for a team of 4 or more professional and/or administrative staff, including recruitment, retention, professional development, setting clear expectations and “stretch” objectives, and performance management.
- Responsibility and accountability for meeting strategic team goals and objectives, including overall qualifications, moves, solicitations, and $12M - $20M in major gift fundraising per year.
- In close collaboration with Director of Philanthropy, lead strategic initiatives involving senior-level stakeholders and make decisions that may have program-wide impact and/or bind the organization financially or legally.
Within the scope of the position, the Sr. ADoP will:
- Directly manage a portfolio of up to 30 donors, including those with the capacity to give over $1M. Responsible for 60-90 moves annually, including 20-30 visits. Annual fundraising goal of $2M or more, along with a goal for planned gift notifications and new prospect qualifications.
- Financial accountability for setting and meeting personal and team fundraising targets, reliably projecting and evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.
- Plan and lead new programs or initiatives that will ensure departmental goals are achieved.
- Persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse funders important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Develop complex, high profile or sensitive gift agreements, including multi-year private grants, ensure ongoing donor communication and fulfillment of the Conservancy’s programmatic commitments.
- Maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
- Minimize legal and reputational risk to the Conservancy and ensure compliance with all applicable external regulations, TNC policies, financial and ethical standards.
- Follow standard operating procedures and proficiently use Conservancy systems, including collaboration tools and constituent management databases.
Work Environment and Schedule
- Travel occasionally, and work long hours and weekends as needed.
- Work is generally performed in a professional office environment and involves infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion or strain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with constituents such as major donors and corporations.
- Track record of cultivating and closing major or planned gifts of $100,000 or more.
- Experience in working in partnership with trustees or board members.
- Experience, coursework or other training in current and evolving trends in charitable giving, particularly in the area of campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Track record of cultivating and closing major or planned gifts of over $1,000,000.
- Ability to design and direct successful fundraising initiatives, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
- Demonstrated experience leading effective teams.
- Ability to determine a funder’s interests, capacity and likelihood for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Expert knowledge of complex charitable gift planning.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience working in a large, complex, not-for-profit environment.
