Strategic Director, Economic Burden of Cancer

Has overall responsibility to build research agenda within the Surveillance & Health Services Research program to address the economic burden of cancer, including health care spending, productivity losses, rising cost of cancer treatment, and comorbidity burden associated with cancer and its treatment. The successful candidate will have expertise to evaluate the economic burden of cancer at the national and state policy levels, from the perspective of payers, employers, and patients and their families. Leads a team of 2-3 health economists in designing, conducting, and publishing original research on economic burden of cancer (including financial toxicity and productivity loss) and the effects of health insurance coverage and structure of coverage (e.g., high deductible health insurance plans; tiering in prescription drug formularies, value-based payment models) on access to high quality cancer care throughout the cancer control continuum, from prevention, screening, detection, treatment, and end-of-life care using population-based surveys and other sources. Provides expert advice to American Cancer Society (ACS) Corporate Center and Divisions and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He or she also oversees development and maintenance of databases for health services research, including the National Cancer Database and SEER-Medicare and work closely with colleagues in Research, Cancer Control Science, ACS-CAN and Health Promotions to identify policy-relevant research topics and provide data needed for program planning and evaluation.  Serves as a national expert and ACS spoke person in economic burden of cancer.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate 2-3 health economists with the goal of maximizing research productivity and fostering individual career development.
  • Prioritize, design and conduct research projects with a focus on ACS priority areas for cancer prevention and control.
  • Foster and maintain strong internal and external scientific collaborations.
  • Publish research findings and editorials in peer-reviewed journals and present research at scientific meetings.
  • Identify and evaluate new data resources for economic burden of cancer and cancer care delivery research, including data linkage opportunities. 
  • Identify new analytic strategies and statistical approaches applicable to economic burden of cancer. 
  • Contributes to translation of research findings to public health interventions through ACS programs, guideline development, legislative initiatives, public and professional education, and public-private partnerships.     
  • Provides expert consultation to ACS CAN, Cancer Control, ACS Divisions, and other national and field staff on the sources, use, limitations, and interpretation of data related to economic burden of cancer.
  • Serve as ACS spokesperson when needed.
  • Publicizes ACS’ studies’ findings by speaking at professional meetings and to the media; consults and interprets results of epidemiologic studies with the media as a recognized expert in the field.
  • Service contribution is measured by level of participation in advisory committees and editorial boards, collaboration on research proposals, peer reviews, scientific manuscripts and research proposals, and collaboration on research grants.
Educational Background: 
Ph.D. or doctoral level degree in epidemiology, health economics, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 15-years experience in public health research with leadership/management responsibilities. Recognized national expert in the economic burden of cancer and/or health services research.  Strong record of research productivity (at least 100 papers in peer review scientific journals).  
  • Superior interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.  Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team setting. 
  • Extensive knowledge of cancer epidemiology and health economics, including methods and study design
  • Nationally renowned expert in economic burden of cancer and cancer care delivery research.
  • Academic appointment/adjunct position.
  • Assignments are in the form of broad goals or areas of responsibility with wide latitude for decision-making.
  • Interprets and evaluates complex scientific research; identifies optimal analytical approaches.
