Research Associate, Social Marketing & Communication

Under the supervision of senior research staff the incumbent will perform all phases of communication research and evaluation tasks. This will include developing, implementing, analyzing, and reporting on research and evaluation funded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Social Marketing and Communication department clients. Project work will primarily focus on domestic (US-based) communication initiatives addressing diabetes education and prevention. Additional project work may address a variety of other public health and education-related topic areas such as obesity, chronic disease, and immunization. Qualified candidates must be skilled and experienced in applying both qualitative and quantitative research methods and statistics. Activities will likely include conducting online surveys, in-depth interviews, focus groups, content analyses, secondary data analyses, environmental scans, and reviews of academic literature. The incumbent will work as an integral member of a team of communication and public health professionals. This position is based in the Washington, DC office.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Under the supervision of a senior researcher, conduct or contribute to all aspects of quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation methodologies including: drafting plans, developing instruments, developing recruitment strategies, recruiting participants, collecting data, analyzing data, and reporting and presenting on findings.
  • Manage research and evaluation timelines and processes to keep work moving forward in a timely, high-quality manner.
  • Conduct interviews with professional and general audiences.
  • Contribute to primary and secondary analyses of qualitative data, including analyses and searches of literature, prior research, interviews, large- and small-group discussions.
  • Contribute to primary and secondary analyses of quantitative data including analyses and searches of marketing, media and lifestyle surveys (e.g., Nielsen, MRI, Scarborough), government surveys, and data developed specifically for project; and reviews of audience segmentation data, public opinion or marketing surveys.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on digital/social media metrics to assess communication reach and engagement.
  • Develop and manage IRB protocols for research studies.
  • Draft and provide technical support to federal funders on Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Information Collection Requests.
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations and project standard operating procedures.
  • Manage research and evaluation vendors and consultants, including coordination and processing of procurement and finance documents.
  • Plan, organize, and manage resources/processes for successful completion of research and evaluation and project goals.
  • Provide counsel to clients and internal staff based on research findings in the form of reports, documents, tables, charts, spreadsheets, manuscripts, forms, research instruments, and oral presentation materials using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Contribute to new business development efforts and the follow established organizational policies and procedures.
  • Use good judgment to monitor and address client issues in a timely manner, and keep senior research and project management apprised of activity progress.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and provides leadership in research and evaluation.
  • Assist with meeting planning and other logistical aspects of research and evaluation activities.
Educational Background: 
Master’s degree or its equivalent required in Communication, Health, Behavioral, or Social Sciences. Coursework must include advanced research and evaluation methods.
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in formative, process, and outcome evaluation methods, preferably in a public health and/or communication context.
  • Experience conducting analyses using statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS) to manage data and conduct descriptive and inferential analyses required.
  • Experience using qualitative software (e.g., NVIVO) as well as online survey platforms (e.g., Qualtrics) strongly preferred.
  • Experience producing high-quality research products including summary reports, tables, charts, spreadsheets, manuscripts, data collection instruments, research and evaluation tools, and presentation materials using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience working with digital/social media metrics strongly preferred.
  • Spanish-language fluency desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and collaborative manner with work colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research and evaluation products and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail.

Experience:

  • Typically requires 8+ years of applied research and evaluation experience, including task management, research methodology, implementation, analysis and reporting.
  • Must be fluent in English and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion with clients and staff.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Typical office environment. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift 5-50 lbs.
