Sr Director of Development, Heart Walk

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Director of Development for the Heart Walk event in our Mid-Atlantic Affiliate office located in Arlington, VA. and serving the Greater Washington Region.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conducts business market assessment to determine market potential.
  • Effectively supervises and directs support staff in work necessary to achieve objectives
  • Supports and ensures execution of National and Affiliate policies, procedures, standards, best practices, benchmarks and guidelines
  • Responsible for volunteer recruitment and management and ensures adequate volunteer staffing for day of event
  • Develops and manages a three-year strategic plan for successor management
  • Other duties and projects may be assigned to the role, which provide general assistance as needed to support the mission of the American Heart Association.
  • Coordinates, plans and implements activities and resources necessary to achieve Heart Walk campaign goals and objectives concentrating
  • Manages and persuades key community and corporate leaders toward establishing recruitment and monetary goals based on market potential in their role in achieving goals.
  • Develops a profile on the top 50 businesses in the assigned geographic area with a written year-round relationship-building plan to ensure their involvement in the Heart Walk with a concentration on company goal setting and top walker development
  • Establishes and maintains an effective database and cultivation plan for corporate prospects, donors, and sponsors in support of Heart Walk events
  • Manages Heart Walk events to provide adequate customer service, trouble shooting, day of event logistical support and completion
  • Provides expertise in Heart Walk policies, procedures, and programs
  • Supports corporate partners and team leaders effectively
  • Utilizes existing national and affiliate Heart Walk materials, products and recruitment tools
  • Confirms thorough, timely and accurate data entry of relevant information including running and analyzing reports to support campaign management
  • Monitors staff and identifies gaps in staffing and resources and fills in where necessary
  • Manages and motivates direct reports to achieve objectives
  • Collaborates with other AHA staff and volunteers as needed to promote and support local initiatives and to optimize Heart Walk market strategy and consistency
  • Ensures the integrity and security of donor information and adheres to the Affiliate’s Special Event Cash Handling
Educational Background: 
BA or BS degree in related field or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have at least 3 years of relevant work experience, including but not limited to fundraising, outside sales or in a non-profit organization
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in a management capacity
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours
  • Experience in event planning, organizing, consultation, and volunteer management.
  • Ability to set aggressive goals with direct reports and clients
  • Ability to plan, work independently and adhere to budget and timeline expectations
  • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer skills (including MS Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • A broad knowledge of the Greater Washington Region is also important for this leader
