Develop and manage strategic partnerships with key volunteers, staff members, and/or constituents for the completion of all duties and responsibilities of the position. Negotiate and establish clear work standards with key volunteers, staff members, and/or constituents. As conflicts and/or complaints arise, evaluate various courses of action; ensuring the selection of resolutions that support both ACS Divisional operating standards and maintain the partnership with the key volunteer, staff member, and/or constituent. As unique situations arise pertaining to functional area operational procedures; deviate, as necessary, from operational procedures in order to best support set work standards and maintain the partnership with the key volunteer, staff member, and/or constituent. Develop and implement new policies and/or procedures within the functional area to support the continuous improvement of operational effectiveness and efficiency. Provide input to short-term objectives of the functional area. Compose correspondences and responses to correspondences on behalf the immediate supervisor; with little or no oversight; often of a complex nature. May act in the absence of the direct supervisor.
Accurately and effectively represent the American Cancer Society and its mission. Act in the best interest of the Society and enhance the image of the ACS in the public eye. Develop and maintain a business understanding of all programs offered by the ACS. As requested, complete continuing education programs offered at the Regional, Divisional, and/or National level.
- Plans, develops, and manages the Discovery Shop, an upscale resale retail shop staffed by volunteers and supported by the local community.
- Recruit, train, manage, and reward volunteers to staff the shop on an ongoing basis; Has sole responsibility for assuring that the shop has a sufficient number of volunteers to run the shop that are trained and competent in the day to day operating procedures.
- Oversee the volunteer steering committee and sub-committees;
- Provide support to volunteer staff regarding shop policy and procedures that comply with Shared Services donation processing and the operating processes of ACS Discovery Shops. This includes merchandising, donations processing, and volunteer recruitment.
- Promote and communicate American Cancer Society programs and policies to the public and volunteer staff;
- Manage donations of clothing, furniture, home accessories, collectibles, antiques, and fine china.
- Provide training to volunteers on assessing value and accurately pricing donations.
- Sort, price, and order supplies. Must have expertise in evaluating merchandise to determine what donations are placed on the sales floor at the appropriate price and which ones need to be sent to other charities.
- Manage all files, taxes, and daily/monthly accounting per standard ACS accounting practices. Provide monthly reports to accounting. Conduct inventory at year end and provide to the accounting department.
- Manage the Discovery Shop’s promotions and advertising. Must represent the Discovery Shop in the community, taking advantage of opportunities to promote the shop whenever possible. Coordinate pick up of goods from businesses and residences, when necessary. Conduct community presentations to prospective donors, customers, and volunteers promoting the Discovery Shop.
- Develop and maintain a strong customer base.
- Promote proactive acquisitions development (i.e. estate sales, partnerships with furniture stores, networking, etc.).
- Coordinate shop upkeep and work closely with landlord, developing a strong relationship.
- Oversee the regular housekeeping and maintenance of the shop.Serve as Discovery Shop liaison with the regional office.
