Directs and defines the organization's financial planning and accounting practices as well as its relationship with lending institutions, Board of Directors, and the financial community by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Directs the accounting functions of the national organization including preparation of the annual operating budget, periodic financial forecasts, monthly management and investment reports
  • Directs and oversees the office operations of the national office
  • Oversees the investment and cash management functions of the national organization
  • Manages the treasury function and credit relationships of the national organization 
  • Directs the development, approval process, and control procedures for the national operating and capital budgets 
  • Directs budget planning and forecasting to ensure alignment with strategic planning process 
  • Evaluates and negotiates tenant leases at the Make-A-Wish building including the planning and coordination of tenant renewals, relocations and/or construction
  • Manages the proper tracking, administering, and reporting of all donor-restricted funds
  • Reviews Corporate Alliance and other organization contracts for compliance with accounting practices and policy 
  • Oversees accounting and risk management related training, as necessary 
  • Reports the activities of the national organization to all appropriate "watchdog" agencies in a timely manner 
  • Establishes and oversees the corporate P-card and Wish-card programs 
  • Oversees the preparation of all statutory filings required of the national organization in all states and municipalities. 
  • Oversees the timely completion of the national office external audit and national office IRS Form 990 
  • Oversees the completion of the national combined audit and the relationship between chapters and the external audit firm, as needed 
  • Directs and monitors internal and management control systems 
  • Collaborates with members of the Compliance and Chapter Advancement teams, as appropriate, in addressing and resolving chapter related matters 
  • Oversees the establishment, maintenance and support of all nationally sponsored risk management programs 
  • Provides special reporting and support to other operating functions of the National Office as needed 
  • Oversees Centralized Finance Services provided to Chapters including implementation services, service quality and ongoing maintenance and support
  • Provides information to chapters in all matters relating to areas of responsibility 
  • Is the staff liaison for and provides staff support to the Audit and Finance Committee
  • Is a member of the Senior Leadership Team
  • Daily attendance at the office is an essential duty
Educational Background: 
Minimum of Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in accounting from a four year college or university, along with a minimum of 10 years related work and managerial experience in progressing levels of accountability and responsibility.
MBA preferred and nonprofit experience a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                           

  • Manages 4 subordinate directors and / or managers who supervise approximately 35 employees comprising the Finance and Operations team. Directs the coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Other Skills and Abilities                                                     

  • Excellent knowledge of internal and management control systems in a complex environment
  • Familiarity with audit planning processes and procedures and with forensic accounting processes and procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and information systems applications in a nonprofit environment
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information with high level of trust and confidentiality
  • Must be familiar with relevant changes in tax and accounting regulations, including those pertinent to the non-profit sector
