Summary
The Advocacy and Policy Manager for International Humanitarian Response will work closely with the Senior Director and Associate Director to implement child-focused advocacy plans and strategies on international crises, US refugee policy and other humanitarian response themes. S(h)e will work closely with international and external coordination groups to support and advance Save the Children’s policy and campaign objectives.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
- Advocacy development and implementation: coordinate and sometimes lead development of crisis advocacy plans and messages within the SCUS Humanitarian Advocacy Team (HAT) and the international Save the Children Humanitarian Advocacy Working Group; support and advance Save the Children’s policy objectives during emergencies, including drafting and distributing plans, advocacy-policy messages, policy briefs, and letters to USG and other stakeholders – 35%
- Campaign coordination: provide coordination and communication support around Save the Children’s humanitarian campaigning, staffing internal working groups, monitoring and reporting on relevant policy developments, producing policy and advocacy materials as needed, and networking with external players in both the USG and INGO community – 25%
- Project management and ongoing support: provide project management, communications, policy and administrative support to the Humanitarian Advocacy Team, senior management, other departments around priority initiatives and events including USG humanitarian appropriations. 20%
- Representation: represent emergency- and response-related policy views of Save the Children in meetings with other departments within Save the Children as well as with other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and USG stakeholders; contribute meaningful input into initiatives and communiqués; report on and track all relevant joint initiatives. 20%
Required Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience in humanitarian advocacy or other relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Public Policy, Political Science or International Relations and/or relevant experience working with humanitarian policy issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the legislative process
- Knowledge of issues associated with humanitarian relief and child protection in emergencies
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with key partners
- Research skills, specifically with internet search engines and Congressional/government websites and online services.
- Writing, editing, and communication skills
- Ability to work cross-departmentally and with Save the Children’s partner organizations.
- Flexibility
- Ability to work under pressure on a number of competing issues
- Computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office Suite (word processing, database maintenance, PowerPoint) and Outlook
- Strong organizational skills
