Veterans Build Construction Site Supervisor

Charleston Habitat for Humanity is seeking a full-time Veterans Build Construction Site Supervisor to be a part of our unique, inclusive, and impactful nonprofit organization, focused on creating affordable housing opportunities in the greater Charleston area. This position is responsible for building and repairing Habitat homes for qualified Veterans in partnership with volunteer groups, subcontractors, and partner families. The Site Supervisor will be a hands-on builder, work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, and report directly to the Construction Manager.

Veterans Build is a new program from Habitat for Humanity International providing affordable housing opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members, and their families. The Veteran Build Construction Site Supervisor will be responsible for the implementation and administration of this new initiative in the Charleston community and will be an ambassador of both the local Habitat affiliate and the national Habitat Veterans Build program. This person will provide leadership on our project sites, engage and develop volunteers to become champions for our mission, and lessen the housing burden on local veteran and military families. We are seeking a passionate individual who is committed to serving a cause greater than themselves and approaches challenges with an innovative problem solving perspective and spirit of teamwork.

The primary responsibilities for the Veterans Build Construction Site Supervisor are the following:
  • Manage the Veterans Builds and Repairs work sites to complete homes on schedule;
  • Build homes in partnership with unskilled and semi-skilled volunteers managing their work on the home builds including framing, sheathing, interior trim work, and landscaping;
  • Facilitate and oversee the activities of subcontractors including plumbers, electricians, HVAC, and other licensed trades professionals;
  • Use organization’s volunteer management system to develop and track a volunteer recruitment plan to aid in home construction including outreach to local veteran service organizations, military installations, civic groups, and other community organizations;
  • Plan the scope of work for home building each week with the Construction Manager;
  • Ensure that all materials, tools, and supplies are fully stocked at site daily;
  • Conduct all aspects of volunteer orientation, paperwork, and safety talk;
  • Complete site clean-up and return all materials and equipment to storage facility; and
  • Maintain vehicle, trailer, tools, and all other equipment.
Applicants should have:
  • High school diploma, current driver’s license, and a clean driver record;
  • Current South Carolina contractor’s license fully bonded and insured preferred but not required;
  • At least three years hands-on site construction experience and current working knowledge of building codes and construction practices including green building
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead volunteers in construction work;
  • Previous experience working for Habitat for Humanity, or similar non-profit preferred;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Project, Excel, and Word preferred;
  • Detail-oriented and able to work both independently and as a collaborative team player;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task on build projects; and
  • Ability to lift at least 80 lbs., climb ladders, work on roofs and crawl space, and work both outside in all types of weather and inside homes on repair projects
