Your Role
We are looking for a Deputy Director of Health Policy who will provide leadership, project planning and coordination of the operations and activities of the health policy department. In partnership with the Senior Director of Health Policy, this person will develop departmental goals and monitor progress, support the management of the health policy team, ensure that staff and resources are allocated appropriately and help develop and lead project work and teams. This person must have a strong understanding of FUSA’s health policy priorities around our four focus areas: health equity, value, coverage, and people’s experience with a keen interest in Medicaid policy and programs. The Deputy Director may act on behalf of the Senior Director in her absence, communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders providing strategic guidance on federal and state health policies that will improve healthcare and overall health of the country.
Main responsibilities include:
- Work with the Senior Director to oversee the internal operations of the health policy team by developing department and project priorities, coordinate across departments to accomplish the department and organization’s goals, and help to oversee the development of the organization’s health policy content.
- Provide health policy expertise across all or most of FUSA’s four focus areas: health equity, value, coverage and people’s experience with particular experience in Medicaid policy and programs.
- Foster an expectation of rigorous analysis and thought leadership coupled with a strong sense of mission and collaboration across departments on advocacy efforts.
- Oversee and steward key project teams including: envisioning highly impactful projects; developing project plans with milestones and deliverables, reviewing workload, priority setting and workflow processes.
- Provide leadership and direction to department staff including: establishing priorities, coach and mentor, motivate, empower, evaluate, and identify opportunities for professional development and growth.
- Support the direct strategic thinking analysis of federal and state policies and proposed policies conducted by the health policy department.
- Develop thought leadership around key current national legislative and administrative activities and economic, political and social trends that affect the organization.
- Act as a spokesperson on health policy issues to help build Families USA’s vision and impact when the Senior Director of Health Policy is unavailable.
- Represent the organization at external meetings and coalition roundtables, including meeting with Members of Congress and Congressional staff, Administration staff, and other key health policy leaders and stakeholders.
- Ensure that deliverables are produced in accordance with funded projects, provide compelling content with participation of policy team and in coordination with the Development team in preparing funder reports and grant proposals.
- Work to build a winning team that collaborates well with other teams within the organization.
Your Experience
Master’s degree or other graduate degree in public health policy, public policy, law, public administration or related field with 8-10 years’ experience in health care advocacy in a senior management position. Experience must include high level content knowledge, knowledge of and with federal and state-level policymaking processes (both legislative and administrative); personnel management, and representing an organization with federal and state regulators, state and national partners, and funders.

Salary will be commensurate with experience, our salary range for this role is 135K - $145K.
